Woke Bank

Quote:
The head of risk management at Silicon Valley Bank spent considerable time spearheading multiple “woke” LGBTQ+ programs, including a “safe space” for coming-out stories, as the firm raced toward collapse.

Jay Ersapah, the boss of financial risk management at SVB’s UK branch, launched initiatives such as the company’s first month-long Pride campaign and a new blog emphasizing mental health awareness for LGBTQ+ youth.

“The phrase ‘You can’t be what you can’t see’ resonates with me,’” Ersapah was quoted as saying on the company website.

Woke Bank. We don’t know whether we insure or ensure your money, because that might be considered bigoted.

I don't know about all that but I'd look at the ESG factors they used.

This sounds like someone who valued a lot of things more than managing risk.

That feeling when you tried to use FTX to kill Bitcoin and ended up crashing the U.S. Dollar instead:

Is there a short version of why this is about Bitcoin and not all the other obvious things it’s about?

Obviously, the precariousness of our financial system is due to many factors. We can go back to the disastrous presidency of Reagan. (A Right Wing friend said to me yesterday, "It always comes back to Reagan for you fucking Lefties, doesn't it?" ) But it seems clear to me that FTX was a government backed plot to murder Bitcoin that has completely backfired.

Nope, It's a long story with plenty of holes in it. But it starts with not letting 3rd world countries become self sufficient. You've heard the story about Colonel Gaddafi starting a new currency, independent of the American dollar, based on gold...and was murdered for it?

You'll be fine. I know a bank President. I have a meeting with him this morning. If he freaks me out, I'll respond back here. Don't do anything. You can eat and stuff, but don't freak out about the money just yet.

It's an unregulated way to secure your money. Sure, value will fluctuate, but so will the us dollar. The whole time the main reason I thought it would die is someone figuring out a way to hack it, but clearly hasn't been done and every day it hasn't is why it will continue to be a new gold standard. When you buy commodities, you can't store them. When you buy Bitcoin, everything is 20 words in your wallet. Why people don't see the value in that is mind boggling to me. I don't think it's an investment anymore but it is certainly a way to protect the money you already have. I even get people who say the government can still get it if they want to, but I don't see how. If they don't have your 20 word passcode, they could freeze funds you might acquire but at the end of the day, you still control the bitcoins and someone out there will be willing to exchange them for you.

The most dangerous thing for world rulers is a borderless currency over which they have no control.

My thought process with bitcoin is it could just as easily/quickly become what the problem would be with money. It only has value because we believe it does. If the financial system collapses and we all go to some one world digital currency then what or how does that work? And what stops people from going back to a barter type society provided they let us or we are able to have certain things like food or materials?

It's really amazing how the world has changed in the last say 100 years and how it's all being put in jeopardy. What's on the chopping block how it's decided is all arbitrary or maybe not if it enriches the right people.

They believe they can control it, I'm not sure why or if they even thought this all the way thru.

You could say that about anything except for food, water, building materials, and energy sources. If everyone is starving carrots are suddenly worth more than gold.

Admittedly, it helps to have a powerful army/navy/space force if you're going to insist a currency has value. I'm sure the Mongol farmers all grumbled when Genghis Khan paid them for crops with paper money, but they just had to take it and trust that it was good. I'm guessing there are a few countries grumbling about the "full faith and credit of the U.S. Government" right about now.

5% interest is a problem nowadays. That's quite a house of cards they've built. I'm a broken record about this, but since 401k, profit is demanded at all costs. Meta lays off again....and the vipers cheer.

I went through the switchover with the first company I worked for in the late 80s. Going from a profit sharing thin to 401k. I believe you are pretty close to when this whole thing changed. We now live in a quarter to quarter world which makes all sorts of people and firms do bad things.

There is also an expectation that the economy is always booming. Look at how many people cried about the cost of eggs. Things get expensive sometimes.
