for the most part yes. apparently there was a 40 second delay before the launch ... i guess it was decided then to just go and see what it does. they never planned on a controlled landing anyway, it was scheduled to drop into the ocean and not be used again. so even if the launch was perfect it wouldn't have given much more data than what they got, so they feel it was a highly successful test. also you never really gain in testing without failure.

Some of the pics/video of the launchpad area make it look like they had no idea how powerful it was. For all the engineering that goes into something like that, I'm wondering if they said "hold my beer" right before launch.
