Does this mean that people might have to actually read the news and educate themselves? You know, like how it used to be and should be? If that is the end result then I love Elon Musk.

No. It means people will eventually pay him for the status they were getting for free.

The Pope derives his status from a Twitter check?

On Twitter, yes. Infallibility has a monthly price on Twitter.

On a website, the Pope can pay people to verify he is the true successor to Peter for those on following him on that website.

Or he can trust the people’s faith and ability to discern his tweets from Mike Francesca’s.

Hey soy boy, everything and everyone has a price. You could be Pope if you bend over for enough bishops.

Charging famous people to do stuff on your website that they were previously doing for free is business genius 101 stuff.

Don’t like it then build your own social media company. Alternatively you can gripe about it like the NYC account.

There’s a word for when government demands private companies provide free services.

But it’s not a government company. And the celebrities who were posting free content driving traffic to the site are leaving. I mean, he owns it and can do what he pleases but it seems dumb as fuck. Then again I’m just a guy who isn’t blowing rocket debris all over Florida so what do I know.

It is/was garbage. Hell, he tried like hell to get out of buying the POS. Why didn't Twitter let him? Because they KNOW. Twitter has nothing going on except a messageboard. You think Zuckerberg could survive with just Facebook?

Why would you let a mark for himself back out of severely over paying for your company?

You wouldn't, but it is telling, considering the rampant criticism he got and a lot of effort was made to try and stop it. As far as I'm concerned, I wish he would have just shut the fucker down.

Legally, I don't think either side could try and get out of it though.

Musk would have been happy to get out but the #1 American value of "maximizing shareholder value" meant they had to force him to buy it once he signed an agreement with a "no takebacks" clause.

I thought we were still talking about New York City not wanting to pay $8 a month for a checkmark.

The $8 check mark revolt is pretty stupid though. It's a lot better value for the check mark crew than a lot of things they spend $8 or more a month.

I think the major complaint is that most people who use twitter hate twitter but are addicted to twitter and they'd complain if twitter did anything.

They’ll also complain about whatever replaces Twitter. People like to complain.

Also, when Twitter boosts the people who pay $8 a month and they get more engagement/interest/money, those who refuse to pay their fair share will complain.

I honestly don't know if they have fixed it but the original flaw wasn't that they charged $8 a month but it was that they let anyone do whatever they wanted for $8 a month with a "verified" account. If you are going to charge $8 a month for verification you need to actually verify who it is and not let some random internet troll sign up as "Illinois department of revenue generation" and then start tweeting about Ron DeSantis.

I thought we were paying to read this site...isn't that the purpose of the membership fees?
