Without seeing the data I want to say there's a clear difference. You see it in the NBA for sure and definitely in the NFL as well. Take for example Loul Deng - super athletic compared to the general population (you and me) but relative to NBA players he's either average or below average. Same with MANY guys and as we know that's where the RAS stuff comes in I guess. It'll help you differentiate between a Loul Deng and a Tyrus Thomas.

Poles appears to be trying hard to limit his picks to players who have garnered top 10-15% Relative Athletic Scores for NFL players at their positions since this statistic started being tracked something like 35 years ago.

I’d like to see who has been very successful with a low RAS to help understand the metric a bit more.

One of the AM stations noted earlier today that the Bears seem to be targeting 5 star high school recruits irrespective of college performance. I’d imagine there’s a lot of overlap between stud HS players and great athletes.

We need to see how high RAS-low production player have historically fared in the NFL. That will put the DT selections in context.

That’s so challenging because you have to measure production. Production metrics would tell you Jalen Carter wasn’t all that impressive. Watching Georgia games would tell you otherwise.

Apparently there's some data here but I haven't bothered to verify.

Poles has said over and over again that he wants length and athleticism, he also likes physical offensive lineman.

He did give a few interesting tidbits about how they see the DT's they drafted and that they want taller DT's that can push the pocket, Poles also said they needed to fill DT slots because they need to be better at stopping the run, still think they need at least one vet DE that can rush the passer, and he seemed to acknowledge that in his post draft media scrum.

They must like someone on the roster at center, not sure who, but read it was a bad draft for centers and they obviously agreed.

They ended the year starting a bunch of guys off the street at LB and CB, Poles has invested heavily in both positions added a ton of talent these guys should contribute immediately on special teams and will likely get plenty of playing time during the grind of the NFL season.

Seems the LT, RT, and RG spots are filled with upgrades, it would seem they could move on from Borom or Whitehair, but who plays center.

WR room is significantly better than last year, especially if they get anything out of Claypool, Tyler Scott could be an interesting weapon.

Poles has made sure that we'll know for sure if Fields is our guy. That works for me.

If this data goes back 6-7 years, someone should be able to do this at a nominal level. For example:

1. Pool all players drafted in the 2nd and 3rd rounds from 2016-2019. So there should be roughly 32*4 of them.
2. For each player, determine the percentage of relevant snaps that they are on the field (defensive or offensive, plus special teams) for their first four years in the league.
3. Normalize that so that the mean percentage for each position on the field gets assigned 100 It would work like OPS+ in baseball, if you play every single snap, you will have a higher value than a third down specialist.
4. Scatter plot that, play%+ vs RAC.

Now that doesn't compare RAC to "playing well," just "playing frequently.". But those latter two should be somewhat correlated after four years in the league.

This isn't a weird thing or Poles thing. Most GMs filter prospects by RAS.

I agree. Poles went 100% on fields. There was no pussy footin to protect his job in case whatever. Dude said "ok Justin, be a man" and we will see the response. I fucking love that, and from what I have seen from justin, I think that's exactly what he wants.

Poles has the ammo to go and get a QB next year if he is not the guy.

Poles appears to be prioritizing RAS to a greater degree than other GMs.

The last Bears GM to have a similar approach was Phil Emery.

I read pre-draft reports from multiple Packers media sources and they invariably focus on players based on RAS because Gute seems to rely on those metrics (for better or worse).

In Dexter's case, the fact that you could use an egg timer to measure his reaction time tells you quite a bit. So does the fact that he had only 17 QB pressures in 2021 and 21 QB pressures in 2022.

He does a solid job shedding blocks, and he can catch, but I'm still struggling to love that pick.

And there's a reasonable chance he will end up as the second best pick of the draft.

Imagine drafting players based off their high school projections.. that’s who our GM is.

This is insane, how in the fuck did this guy sit in front of anyone in a job interview for an NFL team and convince front office types ‘yep, this is our guy’

Only the Bears.. this could get comically bad. I mean, you’re literally drafting guys off potential gimmick plays they could run for you. Smh

And your point is?

A lot of people like this guy. That's fine. It's a little weird for the GM to tout a selection based on that guy's ability to run trick plays, though.

The Bears struggled to execute basic NFL plays pretty frequently last season. Let's work on establishing fundamental offensive competence before we begin expanding our arsenal of trick plays.

He's not some bum, he played behind the best back in the country. I think he'll take Herbert's job by seasons end.

I'm not saying he's a bum, I'm saying Poles' comments are strange.

Johnson seems decent. Brugler ranked him in his top 100.
