Parent sharing pictures of 8th grade graduation with an announcement her son is going to repeat 8th grade at a different school so he can get bigger for high school athletics. Not the first kid to "red shirt" in junior high, just the first I have seen with the announcement accompanied by 8th grade graduation pictures.

8th grade graduation always seems completely superfluous to me. Do the parents not expect more? Ÿes, I know how crabby that makes me sound, sorry . But it's disappointing that parents are bringing that Texas crap for HS sports up here.

Yes, it makes you sound crabby. It's not about expectations; it's celebrating a milestone. We expect our kids to walk and shit in a toilet, but we still celebrate those things. Plus, the kids and their peers feel good about it.

True. But it's not something my parents or school made a big deal about. We didn't have caps and gowns, trip, lunch or any of the other stuff. I guess it's me being jaded.

It was a big deal for us. I remember a lot of parties. I think it was partly because it was about a 50/50 split on what high school people would be going to the next year.

It's not.

Young Crest's school did away with it two years ago. It should be expected to that a child finishes that level of education.

You're not crabby. I remember thinking the same thing when I graduated 8th grade: "How is this an accomplishment? Doesn't everybody do this?" I was embarrassed we had a party.

My sons' preschool actually had a "prom".

Parents like celebrations and kids do too. There's a graduation to middle school that follows for some.

Thankfully my friends from the neighborhood were mostly public and Catholic school kids and had plenty of parties, so I didn't miss that. Especially since only a couple of us went to the same school.

We had all of those things. They're fun for kids, and moms and grandparents get to take pictures. The girls were more giving in those final days too.

I don't get this, by Sophomore year of high school they are all pretty much caught up anyways(height wise).

Here in PA there is no such thing as 8th grade graduation. No party, no cap and gown, no ceremony or diploma. Move along to ninth and don't be late.

Someone did a study of canadian hockey players and found that of the people who make it to professional levels, some unusual amount are kids with late birthdays whose parents had a choice of when to start school and decided to hold them back to be the oldest rather than youngest in their class

I think you’re referring to the Malcolm Gladwell thing that suggested birth year cutoffs for youth sports led to a higher rate of pros with Jan/Feb birthdays?

I agree. For my 8th completion there was a ceremony and cap and gown. I remember thinking then "this is kind of stupid".

My kids both had the same...even completed 8th grade in the same school I attended. I played along nicely but thought it was kind of a waste of energy.

This is interesting. I thought/think some people overdo it when it comes to celebrating some milestones, but you guys hate the milestones. What did or do you celebrate when it comes to your children? I'm assuming birthdays are out.
