Vaughn's brother, Toby Vaughn of Santa Rosa, on Sunday briefly disputed the Sheriff's Department's account, but refused further comment.

Sheriff's officials said Saturday's confrontation with Vaughn was the department's second in two days.

Deputies were called to the same house at 4:30 a.m. Friday because of a disturbance, Spallino said, but because no crime had occurred, deputies took Vaughn to another location to stay with friends, Spallino said.

Vaughn then walked to a pay phone and called 911 several times and hung up, according to the Sheriff's Department. Deputies returned to the spot, and Vaughn said he would keep making calls unless they took him into custody, Spallino said.

Deputies eventually arrested him on suspicion of making false emergency calls, and he was released from Sonoma County Jail about 1:30 p.m. Friday.

Spallino said Vaughn has a 15-page criminal record that includes numerous arrests involving drug possession and drug use, thefts and a state prison sentence for a burglary conviction.

Vaughn's mother Sunday declined to talk about her son or his death.

Her husband, Ronald Vaughn, suffered numerous abrasions and bruises in Saturday's assault, but he did not require immediate medical attention, officials said.

A neighbor said Nathan Vaughn had recently come back into his parents' lives.

"They were at their wits' end with him," said neighbor Katie Robinson. "For a long time, they didn't allow him in the house, but he just started doing yardwork for them again. His parents did the best they could."
