Find I am turning down the volume on the play by play quite often these days.

Started with the hapless Marquis cubs broadcast, but doing it with almost all baseball broadcasts and network NBA stuff.

Having your phone with instantly updating stats while pondering potential prop/line changes is more stimulating than listening to some goof doing the Syracuse play by play 101 crap you hear everywhere these days.

Nah I enjoy the banter of the booth. However, Sutcliffe over selling the impact of Hosmer on the Cubs today was a bit much.

Reading where several of the regional sports networks are going out of business, not sure if there is a huge demand for a Twins only network, but it would seem many of the small market teams will have either limited coverage or MLB will have to foot the bill for some type of streaming coverage.

It does seem that there has been a shift to more of a national type approach to local game coverage, highly doubt a guy with a unique presentation like Harry Carey would get hired today.

Joe Rogan has 10 million watching an episode. Twins have 4000. Twins fans are going to have to start paying through the nose to watch games....and they won't. See the problem?

Definitely wouldn't turn down Bears radio. Thayer is still a great listen.

Was hoping to take a short nap Saturday while listening to the Sox telecast. I can't remember the last time I listened to the radio outside of the car

Benetti has gotten noticeably worse.

I've been saying this for years. Connor McKnight is a better listen.

With big screens and surround sound I prefer less talking. I like the sound of the game I don't need to hear a bunch of silly banter.

Would almost be a nice secondary audio to select.

That's a good idea. Randazzler does Apple games on weekend and if its away the radio broadcast has a big delay. I would watch those games with just the field mics.

Does seem they are trying to move away from the traditional play by play broadcast team model, you see the multicast stuff being used for college football, you can pick what type of view you want, seems the natural evolution of sports broadcasting.

The upcoming death of several regional sports networks seems to necessitate the move to local streaming of games, and it does not seem there would be a ton of money in this for small market teams.

You really dilute the number of people that have access to your product, remember catching the last few innings of Cubs games on WGN back in the day, all my buddies did the same thing and were all fans because we had ready access to a free product, it created a huge number of young fans many of whom still follow the team decades later.

The old Cubs broadcasts were hyper local with the rather unique Harry Carey doing the games. There is no way a young Harry Carey gets hired today, baseball broadcasts, and sports broadcasting in general has been taken over by guys who all are trying to do an ESPN type national presentation. This makes national baseball broadcasts tedious, but makes daily local broadcasts unbearable.

Reminds one of when Tennesse Tuxedo (Mike Emrick) did national NHL stuff, everyone was a superstar, everything was great, no criticism of effort.

If you would watch the Hockey Night in Canada broadcast of the same game you would get a much more honest broadcast where they heavily criticized effort and strategy.

If you know anything about baseball you can see exactly how well or poorly a team is playing by simply watching, having a bunch of grab ass goofs try to lie to you by saying, "nobody works harder than Kyle Schwarber on defense", or talk about spin rate and velocity as you watch a guy struggle to find the plate makes it real easy to turn down the volume on the play by play and just trust what your eyes tell you.

Harry: "Boy Stoney....I don't know where we'd be without Sammy Sosa".
Stone: "Well, Harry...probably still last place".

Boog with Sutcliffe and Dempster I've actually turned the volume down. I owe a debt of gratitude to Boog though he motivated me to recheck my VPN on the MLB app and now it works a high % of the time.

I remember back in the 80's at some point NBC broadcast an NFL game with no announcers to see how it would go over. It must not have gone over well. I think these days NFL football with no announcers and only crowd and stadium sounds would be pretty cool.

Most of the announcers do a way better job than you realize. ESPN runs an alternative broadcast for basketball games, like a sports betting group, and it's beyond annoying to listen to.

Thanks for making my point, national broadcasts seem to be aiming towards more specific audiences while local play by play is trying to a tedious ESPN baseball gabfest when they should be doing a local homer type thing to garner the specific audience that would be tuning in for a local broadcast.

I really miss the Hawk. Despite his faults, you could always laugh at some of his stuff and always tell things without a huge hesitation or fear of saying it? Stone still tries to point out weaknesses of Sox play as a sort of "teaching" moment but Ben. is just ridiculously juvenile in a lot of his takes and questions. it really is weak stuff.

I really loved to listen to Vin Scully.

I remembered this too but couldn't recall if it was football or hockey. Too bad it never caught on.

His involvement basically drives me away from the radio broadcast. The fake laugh in the background, being terrible at play by play. Just.. Blech.

A guy that is so disinteresting that they had to give him the nickname of a chubby 70's first baseman.

He is really unnecessary, especially with JD and Girardi dissecting pitch sequencing with Hendricks on the mound. 2 pros analyzing a cerebral pitcher, and that oaf wants to (again) talk about his bobblehead.

Caught an inning or two of McKnight and Beckham doing the Sox game and found them somewhat tolerable until they started getting into pretzel logic trying to defend yet another Sox attempt to give a game away with piss poor defense, fortunately the combination of a bad Mariners team and stupid modern at bat by a Seattle player who bailed out a pitcher that was obviously rattled by the error and struggling with control which saved the day for the hometown scufflers.

For some odd reason it also reminded me of the legendary Hamp and Holmes show where our hero Larry would go on and on about how the Sox couldn't trade Beckham because he was a budding superstar and the incredibly awkward paid appearances With Beckham as he quickly proved he was not that good at baseball.

It also reminded me of the almost as legendary Bernstein and McKnight effort at SJW sport talk, and the incredibly awkward attempts by our hero Connor to out SJW the jedi of SJW sports talk radio.

This all made me especially thankful for the podcast and the multitude of options now available to listen to during cardio sessions.
