I know there’s a few law peeps here and was looking for an answer as to if I needed to hire one to deal with my mom’s estate.

Kind of depends on how large her estate is, what she owned, etc.

Yeah. Check the probate. Why, my Uncle Thumper had a problem with his probate, and he had to take these big pills, and drink lots of water!

My condolences. Did she have a lawyer? When my Dad died I used his to settle things since he was familiar with everything. Had no issues.

Most of her accounts are also in my name, she had a will and a trust naming me sole whatever. I’m an only child and she’s divorced. No house and probably $300k in accounts I’m aware of. The only issue I’ve had so far is getting access to her safety deposit box as I wasn’t named on it.

Sounds like you probably don't have to probate an estate in you were in joint tenancy on most of her accounts. I'm guessing you were the beneficiary on any investment accounts she had. Those don't need to be probated. If the remaining assets are les than $100k you should be able to get by with a small estate affidavit. It should be pretty straight forward but probably worth a few hundred bucks to have a lawyer look the paperwork over.

Sorry for your loss. I lost my mom in February so I know how much it sucks.
