50+ (up to and beyond retirement age) white guys are freaking expensive these days. Not enough of em to go around in any industry, it seems. And you can't just replace one experienced 40 to 60 or whatever year old with 2 or 3 younger folks. Doesn't work that way, at all. It's crazy the salaries we have to pay to poach an experienced person. And the benefits and vacation better be top shelf. And they do use that freaking vacation, don't expect the experienced folks you new hire to be working more than 10 months out of the year overall. Gen Xers cleaning up rn in the job market.

That reminds me of something my wife likes to say when she's getting pressure on a project and the manager says, "Money isn't a problem. Just hire more contractors.":

Quote:
It takes nine months to have a baby. Hiring eight more people won't get it done in one month.

Yeah, it'll probably implode because of the pressure.

This maybe one of the more stupid things I have read this morning on this deal.

These people are not explorers and to act like they are is idiotic. They are not doing a damn thing for discovery. This is an insult to people who really have risked their lives for exploration and discovery.

Matt Walsh:

Quote:
I instinctively have a lot of respect for people who do daring and dangerous things for the sake of exploration and discovery. That's why I just can't understand the reflexive contempt that everyone on this site seems to have for the people trapped in the submersible. It's the opposite of how I think about these things. I don't get it.
We used to respect people who were willing to risk their lives for the sake of exploration. Now we openly despise them and laugh when they die. The old attitude was much healthier. This new attitude is sick and depraved.

Agree 100%. These people are sightseers. They are no more "researchers" than someone trying to climb Mt. Everest or the people who got burned up visiting that volcano in New Zealand a couple years ago.

I feel bad for the families of the people on the sub who are likely dead, but c'mon. You reap what you sew, right?

As of last week, both of the Chicago Fire Dept helicopters were out of service because repairs needed were too expensive. I would think that some of the money spent on this rather useless search could be spent to fix one of those machines which would then have a legit chance to rescue people this summer.

Right, this isn't an act of discovery propelled by curiosity so much as it is an act of social signification ostensibly designed to confirm the hegemony of the nouveau leisure class. The whole trip is intended less to be an experience (especially given the sensory deprivation involved) than it is intended to provide a story about an imagined experience. It is therefore something even more vacuous than conspicuous consumption--it is the conspicuous narrativization of (non) consumption desperately trying to ascend to the level of "legitimate" experience.

It's like watching AFV and a parent stands too close to his kid swinging a baseball bat and he gets hit in the nuts and everyone laughs. Some things are just funny and that includes billionaires dying in home made submarines that communicate by text messages and are driven by a video game controller.

That was a stepson and everybody grieves in their own way. I'm not going to bash anyone for that, even though it definitely comes across as 'IDGAF about my dead stepfather in a submarine'

I really do hope they rescue these folks because i just have to hear this story from inside. imagine if they are bobbing on the surface right now unable to get out because they are bolted in with no provision in place to pop a hatch for air, and the mastermind is sitting in there trying to explain why he decided that was a good idea?

There was an over 50 white dude in the sub that was a real explorer I think, not sure why he was slumming it though.

He was a thrill seeker. I get it, but nothing about this was worth the risk or cost.
