2005 List from http://www.philbrodieband.com/muso_solos_riffs.htm

Thoughts?

Personally I think Sweet Child O' Mine by GnR needs to be closer to the top.

1. Smoke On The Water - Deep Purple
2. Sunshine Of Your Love - Cream
3. Layla - Derek And The Dominos
4. Satisfaction - Rolling Stones
5. Iron Man - Black Sabbath
6. Heartbreaker - Led Zeppelin
7. Sweet Child O' Mine - Guns N Roses
8. Back In Black - AC/DC
9. Johnny B Goode - Chuck Berry
10. You Really Got Me - The Kinks
11. Purple Haze - Jimi Hendrix Experience
12. Bad To The Bone - George Thorogood & Destroyers
13. Crazy Train - Ozzy Osbourne
14. Day Tripper - The Beatles
15. Voodoo Child (Slight Return) - Jimi Hendrix Experience
16. Paranoid - Black Sabbath
17. Summertime Blues - Eddie Cochran
18. Wild Thing - The Troggs
19. Sweet Home Alabama - Lynyrd Skynyrd
20. Roadhouse Blues - The Doors

some of those songs are more memorable for the vocals than the guitars...

and what riff?
the intro, chorus?
this list sucks...

agree on smoke on the water
wild thing should be in the top 5.
sweet home bama is low
satisfaction and sunshine are low top ten at best.
layla is probably 6th...
heartbreaker is too high as well.

wish you were here is more recognizable.

AC/DC had two of the best guitar rifts I've ever heard, "Back in Black" & "You Shook Me All Night Long"...Also, Eric Clapton's guitar work over the years is very recognizable to my ears. Clapton's guitar rift with Derek & the Dominos' classic "Layla", his solo work starting with his 1970 debut self-titled effort up to his work with 1989's "Journeyman"...Gotta love it!

Crazy Train is definitely one of those guitar riffs that is easily recognized and one of my favorites. Amazing how memorable Rhoads is and the fact that he left this earth at the age of 25.

Not being a guitarist I can only think of some that are more of a fan basis....

November Rain is another one that sticks out, especially the solo part. A guitarist that doesn't get much press is Eric johnson - Cliffs of Dover is a great guitar riff filled song.

I'm not really into "the rock music." More of a hip-hop/r&b guy. But I'm not sure I've heard a better guitar riff than Clapton's Layla.

see....o.k.

if this is a list by guitar players, then it's a different story.

guitar riffs, to me at least, are intros/verses and choruses. not blinding speed runs.
b/c you could argue that satch boogie or little wing is just as recognizable. does that make sense?
maybe i'm missing the point.
b/c a song like blind by korn...everyone knows the stacatto "dadadada....dadadada"
so "classic" great and recognizable guitar riffs?

hence songs like:
smoke on the water
purple haze
wild thing
money for nothing
sweet home alabama
layla
back in black
etc...

Walk this Way? Anyone? Anyone....?

Enter Sandman? (ok it's probably not top 20 but if Summertime Blues is on there.....)

They are based on bass licks rather than guitar, but Come Together and Sweet Emotion I would put up there too

Sweet Child should be higher, although it really isn't a riff. It was an arpeggio exercise that Slash did and Izzy started playing the chords under it just fucking around. Axl happened to be writing lyrics upstairs. Voila. If the guy doing the rating was familiar with the story behind it he may not have rated it as high.

Agreed that the solo in Novermber rain is outstanding. Also a big fan of Cliffs of Dover.

I really think "Heavy" by Collective Soul belongs on this list...

Are you talking about the riff in the second half of the song? If so, indeed, good.

There are so many great guitar riffs that can be mentioned, but the riffs that are stuck in my head right now (I know, there was another thread for that  ) are the ones from "Suicide & Redemption" off the new Metallica album. Also "Holy Wars...The Punishment Due" from Megadeth comes to mind.

I'm always surprise the "smells like teen spirit" guitar solo makes any lists. I think after about a week of playing guitar I had that solo down

maybe one of the 100 greatest solos by bands whose names begin with the letters "Ni" for the decade.

The "Smells Like Teen Spirit" riff isn't really original, it's almost exactly like the riff in "More than a Feeling".

Never thought of it that way, but if we start playing that game, we could trace everything back to this guy...

While I have not played guitar in quite some time, I remember the few times being in Guitar Center that EVERYONE was playing the damned Sweet Child O' Mine riff. I think it should be banished forever into oblivion, right along with Stairway.

Stairway, when played correctly, is still awesome.

"Yellow Leadbetter" by Pearl Jam is another one that immediately gets recognized.

However, as already stated in an above post, I question the validity of this study if Enter Sandman is not even mentioned in the Top 20. EVERYONE knows that song.

I still enjoy 'Ledbetter', but when I see PJ in concert and hear those jangling chords, I immediately head for the exit. I've seen/heard that song enough, and it gives me a jump start on getting out of the lot.
