They have it now Darkside, but a little forward thinking on their part could have prevented that. My father was doing install work for a new large hotel in Rosemont and they did not think of this issue and had to redo the whole numbering scheme because Rosemont requires that you be able to dial 911 directly. This will be more of an issue as time goes on because more and more municipalities are requiring direct access to 911. (there might be a business opportunity for you)

No, they don't have to change their dial plan. They've just got to allow direct 911 access, something systems have been designed to do for 30 years.
To shut down direct 911 access because some IDIOT can't stop "accidently" dialing 911 is RIDICULOUS. Just. Don't. Dial. 911. It's crazy. I can't believe how many people out there just can't stop dialing 911. Man. You know how many times I've accidently dialed 911? In 10 years of being a telecom technician, and working in offices where my installed systems require dialing 9 and also when I worked as a bill collector and had to dial probably 200 numbers a day? Never. I've never accidnetly dialed 911. How does that happen? How bloody stupid.

Yeah, he didn't give me the whole story, but apparently they did screw up royally. I too have never dialed 911 on accident. The only way I could see it is if you needed to dial 9 to an outside line and accidently double tapped 1 for long distance. You would think though, that if you did that once you would be careful not to do it again.

That's what I thought to. It's not all that unreasonable that this is a recurring problem though if you consider that, as Darko described, this is a call center, which means a large number of people constantly calling, high staff turnover rate, possible distractions (magazines, books) by the staffer desks, etc.

Not to mention that this particular place doesn't exactly hire physics professors for their call center.

We have one of these VOIP systems. One way we avoid this kind of possibility is that we dial 7 for outside calls, and not 9. Don't need the 7 to dial 911 though. Seems like both the client and your company missed the boat by not thinking of such a simple alternative solution that could have solved the problem without putting people at risk.

I addressed this earlier but I'll go again.
Their dial plan prevents alternative Route Selection short codes.
In other words, they have extensions that start with most numbers 1-8. When you have 8xxx extensions, you can't have 8 access your ARS tables.

I don't really know what all this means, as I deal with other kinds of tables. Then they should have four digit or five digit extensions or whatever is necessary to avoid the problem in the first place. You sound like my IT guy giving me some technical explanation for why the phone or telecon system won't work...and why it's not his fault.

UPDATE!!!

I've been told that my company is no longer mentioned in the suit, however XYZ has not been dropped.
I've also been told that before I talk to any lawyers from either party, I am to go straight to our legal department. I've been also told that I'm to continue working on that account as though nothing happened.
My company had adopted a policy that since we lease systems, instead of selling them, we will refuse any programming requests that remove the ability of a phone to simply dial out 911.

While I can't see how they would expect you to keep working on the account like nothing happened, I do agree with the new policy.
