Chinese? Not much. Chinatown kitchen on Waukegan near Valley Lodge is perfectly average. The place in downtown Glenview - Kim’s - scares me. I’m not sure what type of meat they’re cooking but I very much doubt it’s what they say. I had some sort of “chicken” dish there once and it was gray.

Northbrook has PF Changs, which always hits the spot.

They are all the same. Only difference is the egg rolls. Best egg rolls I've had is canton chef if Schaumburg on roselle and weathersfield

You can go crazy high end. I ate at a place in the Peninsula Hotel about a decade ago that was terrific. However, I tend to agree that the Chinese restaurant in Suburb X is more or less the same as Chinese restaurant in Suburb Y.

This guy isn't fooling around. Peninsula is indescribably good. Not even in the same universe with your above average chinese places. But, I can't afford it.

Thanks for the recommendations, I will check them out.

Agree with JORR that Boston Fish Market is very good.

Thank you

Had dinner Friday at a new place in Wilmette called Taverna Noxos.

Really, really good.

Been working up in Lincolnshire and hit up Max and Benny's for the first time in a long time. They had no one in the restaurant when I went, but I assume its more of a weekend crowd. The corn beef is good, but not outstanding.

Most suburban Chinese is average, passable, etc. Chinatown obviously has the best stuff.

However, if you are ever in the Roselle area, try this place

You can find Joy Yee in the burbs out in Naperville, still one of my favorites in Chinatown. If you can speak Mandarin, there's some specialties not on the menu they will make for you. The hot pot was quite awesome.

One of the few things I miss about living in DuPage county is the fried noodles at Katy's in Westmont. Although I think the old man who was the primary cook may have retired.

I want to like Yu's but the Schaumburg location gave me the violent shits twice. The first time felt a lot like the night before a colonoscopy.

Yan Yan in Buffalo Grove is really good.

For high end I would hit up The Colonial which just opened a branch in Lake Forest. Sure it's Vietnamese and not Chinese, but you gonna tell me they're not basically the same thing?

if it's the place I'm thinking of then I'm either not a fan or I've never been but heard it wasn't that good. Or I have no idea. Is Tong in the shopping mall at Dundee and Sanders?

The one on 22, or the one at Lake Cook and Arlington Heights Road? The Lake Cook/Arlington one is much better, and owned by the brother of the guy that owns Heng Wing in Palatine....recipies are damn near identical. Best Satay Beef I've ever had.

Yeah. I haven't been there in awhile but it used to be excellent. But someone may have told me that it had gone downhill a bit.

My wife is from Palatine and her family swears by that place. Let's say I was less than impressed.

Honestly, I haven't been there in a handful of years, but the last time I was, I thought Yen Yen had surpassed it at that point. But compared to the other options in the area, it was very good (Yu's Mandarian sucks)

There are a lot of generic "meh" places in the far North suburbs. Hong Kong in Mundelein is signifficantly better than most places. Not claiming it's the best and up to par with Chinatown, but in my air it's good.

For sure. There's also a Hong Kong in Libertyville...same name. Different owner. Significantly terrible.

Royal Cantonese in Mundelein is decent too. There was a place on Midlothian called China Court that was really good...and of course they just went out of business.
