Got tix for 23rd. The closest good IMAX is Tampa a couple hours away but should be worth it. I know someone who went to the premiere and he said it was great. It'll be interesting to see how well this does.

No, not in terms of their importance to the New Wave movement.

Let's see... Rotten Tomatoes approval rating of 100%, directed by Jonathan Demme...won the National Society of Film Critics Award for best non-fiction film in 1984...Ebert gave it 3 1/2 out of 4...so, yeah totally overrated

By the way, I think the use of Mt. Rushmore is on the Mt. Rushmore's of over-used comparisons

They did a 4k restoration with the original negatives and remastered the audio. They were well broken up by the time I started listening to real music so I discovered them later. They hit on something with this tour with the visuals and the energy its a very entertaining show. Then they stopped touring instead of taking it further. If this is successful maybe other bands will do it that have concerts shot on film. With the strike dragging on they'll have to show something...concerts and classic movies would be fine with me.

I don't think so. Who else was doing that in the early 80s? Queen at Montreal and Exit Stage Left are only two I can think of that compare. The Wall is rotting in Waters garage. Concert films from early 80s were brutal. The directors didn't have a clue they'd show the crowd as much as the band. Its too bad more bands from that era didn't do something similar like The Police or The Cars.

The Police Around the World

The Police Live at Gateshead

Urgh! A Music War which parts of are in The Police Around the World

I don't care for the Synchronicity Concert due to the backup singers (one had been in the Talking Heads Tour...McDonald) and although there were horn players on the Gateshead show (Ghost in the Machine Tour). I didn't mind them as much.

Yeah....I get that they're not for everyone, but they're influence and importance cannot be disputed.

Around the World is a great doc I have the blu-ray. I was thinking of a concert film shot in high quality film for a theatrical release or at least the potential of a theatrical release. I would have liked if they released the Japan show on Around the World in full for example. I wonder if they did shoot the whole show. Its possible Miles Copeland has the negatives if that's the case. He has the negatives for Music War they were going to use them for a blu-ray release. He had the audio tracks so they used those for the DVD. I don't have it I was waiting for the blu-ray which doesn't look like will happen anytime soon.

I think Synchronicity is a good example of how not to shoot a concert. The production really let them down with the silly computer graphics and lame crowd shots. I thought it what was a wasted opportunity. Do you have the DVD release? I wonder how that looks I didn't bother to buy because I don't know how they can save that one lol. I think at that time bands were just slapping things together for VHS and Laserdisc without any thought of doing theatrical release. I don't even know what film format they were shot in maybe 16mm? Its been awhile since I watched that did they take the backup singers on the whole tour or just use them for the video shoot?
