Poles has only picked on DE in the past two drafts while taking 3 DB's with his first and second round picks.

He's kind of painted himself into a corner at that position and will need to spend tons of cap room to get starting level DE's.

Sweat is at least a starting level DE, but you do not have another one on the roster, and you are starting guys that are marginal NFL backups, you really have no other choice than to reach and overpay at this point. As Jurko said, "they bought the windows before they built the foundation", really GM malpractice and we are seeing it every Sunday as this D cannot get off the field on third downs.

Chase Young, but if he shows anything he's gonna be expensive.

There will be the same opportunity to bring in older guys, especially at DT, but one-year fixes.

Could pay Connor Williams to solidify your center spot, the new HC will likely have a ton of say in how they approach this spot which will be very important if you draft a QB.

The time of pissing away cap room on 4-5 tier FA's to put bodies in spots should be over, it is time to bring in legit top-level talent, it will cost you, but you have been a bottom 5 franchise for the past 3 plus years, so time to use all those resources..

Chase Young allegedly failed 4 medical reviews. He's not getting paid.

and inside sources from the commanders considered trading him an "addition by subtraction"

Yeah, Johnson has more leverage than Sweat, but I believe the Bears could place the transition tag on him.

I think free agency is going to be cold water in Johnson's face. I just hope he doesn't talk himself out of taking an offer from the Bears out of ego

He'll be back.

Transition tag: The transition tag is a one-year tender offer for the average of the top 10 salaries at the position -- as opposed to the top five for the franchise tag. It guarantees the original club the right of first refusal to match any offer the player might receive from another club. The tagging team is awarded no compensation if it chooses not to match a deal.

Another coach fired via HR? The new Team President just needs to clean house and get it right for once.

https://www.chicitysports.com/david-wal ... e_vignette

According to Kevin Fishbain with The Atheltic, the Bears’ human resources were involved in the decision to fire Walker:
“The Chicago Bears have fired running backs coach David Walker, according to multiple league sources. The team’s human resources department was involved in the decision.”

Edit: Sorry I missed Nas' post on this. But this whole group needs to go.

Mully said rumors were that Sweat wasn’t thrilled to come to the Bears and can see him holding them up for massive money…or being disgruntled if they slap the tag on him.

Who would be thrilled to come to a 2-5 team in cold weather that just fired two coaches for jacking off in the bathroom?

Large amounts of money will change his opinion real quick. Problem is that the Bears will have to massively overpay him to play in Chicago. Even if you use the franchise tag on him you are overpaying for his services which you only get for the rest of this season plus 2 more tagged seasons before he is a FA. When the Bears hopefully are ready to win, he will be gone to FA. No way he signs when you pissed him off with the Franchise Tag for two years.

You could have just waited until he was a free agent and paid him the most money, which you likely have to do to sign him anyway. Horrible move by Pace.

All this for "just a guy" is asinine.

His annual salary will be somewhere around the 2024 franchise tag number. He has no leverage.

You can take the 2021 roster and assets, and I'll take what we have today going forward. It's SIGNIFICANTLY better than what existed. Poles has already turned a situation worse than what Emery left in a direction where you can see light. No light was present when Pace and Nagy left 18 months ago.

We just fired a 2nd assistant coach for god knows what. That light is an oncoming train.

This place is becoming a room full of Debbie Downers trying to one up the last "guy" with an even more pessimistic view. When those views are proven wrong, everyone pushes ahead with the next negative views. Rinse and repeat until one is correct. Then celebrate.

Bears can only use one tag per offseason. It is why most of us assume there is already a deal in place with Sweat.

You're right. The 2020 season was the only year that both could be used.

Poles seemed to have a decent plan for the teardown, even managed to get a 4th rounder for Quinn, but he has not inspired confidence that he can handle the rebuild.

It started with the rather inexplicable Claypool trade, did he just ignore the fact that Pittsburgh was willing to give up on him, really failed to evaluate the player and the person, a monumental failure at the pro personnel level.

Started out free agency by whiffing on several guys, got the feeling that top end guys were not that interested in coming here, and you can see why as the coaching staff has proven to be a collection of....well we don't know what they were doing to get fired, but they certainly were not real good coaches and you see the results on game day week after week.

He settled for some 3rd level FA's, guys that were rotational guys elsewhere, but not starting level, you see the results on game day. You can see why Buffalo let Edmunds go, he is a big and fast guy that plays slow and soft.

Do like the first-round pick, jury is still out on the rest of the draft picks, and the only guys that are playing better than their draft status are a LB and QB who were UDFA's.

How do FA compensation picks work now? If Sweat and Johnson both leave with or without being tagged, what do the Bears get back in terms of picks?

The Bears crappy 2021 roster and their crappy coach won 6 games. This year's "significantly better" team is on pace to win about 4 games.
