Sometimes my memory is bad. Was Eberflus Poles' hire? Didn't the general manager and coaching candidate interviews overlap? I'm almost certain their 1st round of interviews with coaching candidates happened before hiring a GM. Isn't that odd?

A quick internet search shows Poles was named GM on January 25 and Eberflus was named coach January 27.

He picked one of their coaches to get a 6 year deal. Caldwell may have been the better option.

I'm sure Trace Armstrong, who got Poles his job, wanted Poles to hire Eberflus. Poles didn't have the brains or the will to pick somebody else. That's on him.

It's important to remember that Poles has essentially done only two things right since becoming GM: Clear cap space and accumulate draft picks. He appears to be a below average talent evaluator and absolutely should not be trusted to run the 2024 draft.

There is no reason to get rid of him right now. Let him bumble his way along the rest of the season. Get a high draft pick(s) and then can him at the end of the year.

Well just last week Poles gave Eberlush his ringing endorsement and it sounds like he's coming back

Certainly no sports owner, GM, or executive has ever given their coach or manager a vote of confidence only to fire the same coach/manager during the following offseason. This never happens in sports, ever.

The report that you cite is based entirely on a tweet by Courtney Cronin, who blames "the Bears" for mismanaging the IR situation, not Eberflus specifically.

Jordan Sigler appears to have made an unjustified interpretive leap in "reporting" on Cronin's reporting.

In any event, this is definitely Poles' fault, as you say.

I am coming around on Eberflus, not as a good coach but as a source of entertaining press conferences. Listening to him get grilled about “the meltdown” and give nonsequitur answers and getting his signature “yeah” thrown back at him was hilarious.
