I think there were a few times in the pre-Musk Twitter Era where July's account saw a precipitous drop in followers over a short amount of time, which usually coincided with Twitter cleaning out old bot accounts, but I don't think she bought and paid for tens of thousands of followers for years.

Her horrible engagement numbers relative to her follower count is likely driven by a multitude of factors (sporadic tweeting schedule, random topics from local sports to pop culture to sexual assault allegations, etc.), but I think chief among them is the fact that she tried to amass her twitter following on twitter. When she was gaining a lot of followers, it wasn't from doing other media appearances and pushing her socials, it was from being embroiled in controversy on the platform and being re-tweeted by others with bigger followings. Sure, she gained followers from that exposure, but for how long is a follower from Sarah Spain or whichever of the bigger accounts RT'd her during the Kane Rape Saga is going to stick around and interact with Julie for her thoughts on...a random Cubs day game (when she won't tweet about the Cubs for a week), or her Bears thoughts, or her tweets about some pop culture event? She was gaining followers from the very people on the platform from whom she was creating lackluster, lazy, derivative content, and after awhile she'd give up and try something new or, even worse, go to war with them.

I can't remember which comedian it was, maybe Greg Fitzsimmons, who early on in the podcasting game said that the podcast you do isn't supposed to make you money, it's supposed to keep you in the mind of the listener so you can tell them when you're going to be performing near them so they'll buy a ticket, or merch, or download a special, etc., and I think Twitter is a very similar animal. Julie miscalculated, and thought it was simply the follower count that would make her money or give her prestige.

Plagiarism is a big issue in academia. Everyone employed in the field knows it. But I agree that she wasn't really fired for plagiarism. But she also wasn't fired by the right wing.

The other thing everyone employed as a college president knows is that there is no more important group than big donors. They are more important than any student or faculty to the college presidents job. You could make an argument that in modern academia, the college president's primary job is fundraising. That's why Dean Martin allowed Rodney into school

She touched the third rail of her industry a couple of times. That is difficult to survive.

But it's interesting that the generation of writers lamenting her ouster don't seem to grasp the seriousness of plagiarism. They've grown up in a world where people "aggregate" or casually quote, often without attribution, the work of others on the Internet all the time. Rex Chapman is more famous for reposting memes created by others than he ever was for playing basketball.

It's like the fact that music and porn are now free. It's a genie that is tough to put back in the bottle. And we'll soon be ruled by AI which is really nothing more than computer algorithms that plagiarize the work of human minds.

I don't know why colleges even bother to hire administration from the academic world. The skills of the jobs don't seem particularly transferable. I've dealt with a few and been lightly involved in searches and I always came back to the groups with the same question, how good is this person at fundraising and pr? I don't care a lick, in regards to this job, that she is the cutting edge academic on X theory. Find me the best fundraiser and we'll be able to hire her to continue to teach X theory
