Better than voluntarily taking sacks like your guy the 23rd best QB does.

I'm sure the Bears players and their fans are just chomping at the bit to draft the 22nd best QB in the NFL. Positively "giddy" in fact

Still lots of Bears fans that are chomping at the bit to keep the 23rd best QB. So it kind of makes sense, on balance.

Not really.

What the hell do you mean "not really"? Wasn't one of your central arguments that 80% of bears fans wanted to keep Fields?
What is understood need not be explained!

On some level I get what you're saying. However the objective is to upgrade the position. If Williams is simply on a par (or even slightly better than Fields) with Fields, then the selection is an absolute disaster. Particularly given what that they could have acquired had they simply traded pick before the other team "discovered" that he is a bum. If Williams is not a top 10 QB in 3 years, then the selection of him was a disaster. He has to be good-great in order to justify the pick. If he isn't then the Bears are screwed. Its just that simple

"Quarterback has to be great for team to be successful."

You can't get this kind of hard hitting NFL analysis anywhere else, folks.

It’s a fair point. Williams would be a massive, massive bust if he’s not good given the broader context surrounding the pick.

thats the best way to look at it. which guy has a more potential? fields could take a coby white leap. caleb could take a micheal jordan leap.

I think any no 1 pick who doesn't deliver is in some sense a bust. Maybe it's slightly more of a disaster because of all the generational talk. But you're not losing anything when you replace Fields - he's barely replacement-level. It's a different conversation if you replace a productive QB like Prescott or Cousins for Williams and he busts. Then there's some regret because of if you kept Prescott or Cousins you'd have a chance to make the postseason and do damage. But if Williams busts no one is gonna say "oh if only we kept the 23rd best passer we would have been better off".

I agree. If he's not good/great, then the pick was bad. But if he's bad, it doesn't mean the Bears are screwed. We're talking about a team that's rarely been relevant for over 30 years. They'll just continue to suck.
It's worth the risk to me.

I'm not even sure if there a risk - they have the no 1 pick. They're not losing assets to draft Williams. There's opportunity cost things to consider - if I go the Williams route that means my opportunity cost is the trade down path, and vice versa, but there are always similar opportunity costs when you draft no 1.

I'm projecting by the time we confirm Williams is a bust if that happens, it's somewhere near the end of year one or beginning of year 2, and by that time Fields would have been benched anyway. I am predicting the Tr.ubisky path more or less for Fields once/if he leaves.

I think I heard that a significant number of Super Bowls have been won by quarterbacks that were selected #1.

8. One of them David Carr as Eli's backup. So 7.

That means every season there's a 25% chance a quarterback drafted #1 will win the Super Bowl.

I don't generally disagree with your point, but if the Bears are a great team no one will care. No one cares about the 49ers Lance trade or what they did with the 3rd pick in 2017 or them choosing Jimmy G over Brady in 2020.

It is a risk, depending on the offer for the #1. You do in fact lose a lot(possibly) if he's a bust, or even just middle of the road.

The flip side is he's a stud and your return ends up being shitty or just good. Passing on possibly 3 HoF quarterbacks in less than a decade would make us the butt of every football joke for a couple of generations.

 Scared of of passing over a HOFer? I wouldn't lose too much sleep over it. Odds are Poles is taking the QB with the biggest tits. You can buy a poster on April 24th and rub one out.

Sorry, I couldn't wait.

The Lord isn't coming to get us now. That light you see is from the Sun. The black clouds are clearing up. Soon, we'll be able to enjoy Bears football.

If they take Williams and he’s a bust, everybody involved should get fired.

…but the Bears don’t operate like a real business. Poles will get the Ryan Pace post-Trubisky treatment.

I agree. He can't get this wrong. He has done a helluva job imo in rebuilding the team, but he can't screw this up.
