If it's an anecdote it's a season-long anecdote. Likely more to do with with Mahomes'-Gronk Kelce being distracted by the pop-star for stretches during the season + Mahomes not having any other reliable go-to receivers--until more recently with rookie Rice and he seems to trust MVS in big game situations somewhat too now.

He's considered a top 5 quarterback, even though he frequently wets the bed. He looks uncomfortable and sweaty in big moments, but he gets a pass.

Not in my top 5.

Not in my top 5.

Captain Comeback may potty train him, but I would take Purdy over him today.

can you teach someone to be Tom Brady in the 4th? I dunno. Tom Brady was already doing Tom Brady things late in games in relief of Drew Henson at Michigan.

If you can teach someone to cowboy up and not tighten-up in the 4th, you can maybe fix Fields. Purdy might be the closest to Brady in the 4th among the younger QBs. Stroud's good too. Stafford had a bit of that late game comeback mojo. But as Stafford's wife even pointed out to her husband and also applies to Purdy in these comeback games: if he hadn't sucked in the early part of the game Stafford/Purdy wouldn't need to comeback in the 4th.

As I said the other day, I believe the Brady's and Kobe's develop into killers at a young age because they aren't as physically talented as their peers. I don't believe it's something you can develop as a pro. I think you can learn how to manage anxiety in key moments. That likely comes from a great coach helping to build your confidence. Maybe Harbaugh can do that for Herbert.

for all the statistical regular season goodness of Purdy, I'd be looking to get better at the position if I could if I were the 49ers. Giving up on Lance for so little was a mistake.

If Purdy was drafted in the first round you' wouldn't be saying this. He almost overcame Shanahan's bed wetting.

I had the same thought watching the last few games.

He looked more poised than I expected so I’ll definitely concede on that. Still, completion of 60% for 255 yds and 1 TD doesn’t exactly scream superstar.

Purdy wasn't great yesterday. I thought he started the game well, and errors by his teammates prevented the offense from scoring more. He was AWFUL in the 3rd quarter. I thought he was outstanding again in the 4th quarter and overtime.

I think MANY discount a player's ability to perform well in critical moments. Purdy has that ability. We see far more talented players like a Herbert or even a Manning come up short because the moment is too big for them.

Shanahan didn't prepare for the Chiefs' great secondary being able to eliminate the 49ers' top targets. That's coaching. CMC was AWFUL until the 4th quarter, and overtime, but Shanahan should have run the ball more.

CMC, Deebo, Kittle, Aiyuk..even their 3 and 4th WR's are solid. No reason you shouldn't put up 30 points every game with that talent. They need to upgrade from Purdy.

Fields for the 31st overall?

The cult gets a win in that their guy goes to a team with a stacked roster and great offensive coach. Bears get a slightly better pick than the 2nd most people seem to think he’s worth.

Win-win-win.

He wanted Lance when he could have taken Fields. The Bears would trade back if they had Purdy.

The 49ers window with Purdy is over. They are going to start losing players on offense to free agency. CMC has one more elite season under his belt. The defense is aging.

It all depends on how much money Purdy wants. You can win a Super Bowl with him at a reasonable price. You can't give him the type of contract that future HOF QB Jordan Love is going to get though.

They lost a close game in OT. How exactly did it prove you can't win a Super Bowl with him at a reasonable price?

Herbert is fine in critical moments. His defense gives up leads he stakes them

The elite QB won the game. As is the case 99% of the time.

I suppose not winning the Super Bowl with the least expensive version of Purdy would be one argument.

I mean, of course you'd rather have Patrick Mahomes over Brock Purdy but I don't think Mahomes is available for the 49ers.

He got a lot closer to winning the Super Bowl this year than any other QB.

Niners can't really afford to pay a top QB, if they could even lure one to Santa Clara (Tom Brady out of retirement rumors are non-starters) , and keep the band together--around $50 million over the projected cap already for 2024, iirc. It's a helluva team. KC's defense deserved MVP (with an assist from Brock Mid and/or Shanahan's reluctance to let Brock cook/fuck-up) .

Felt like the middle part of the game, once they got beyond the first few scripted drives, Purdy was doing extended hand-offs to receivers around the line-of-scrimmage, until they needed him to do something in the 4th and OT a bit. Although throwing screens and behind the line to Deebo and CMC not the worst strategy; needed to KC's defense honest by trying more downfield plays at that point.

You roll with Purdy for one more rookie deal year (Niners don't get a 5th year on Brock). The good news maybe for the Niners is they can work out an extension for Purdy this off-season without falling into the Ravens-Flacco trap of overpaying a middling QB b/c they won a SB. To be fair to Flacco, he was much better during the Ravens 20213 SB run than Purdy during this failed Niners SB run.

Why would Purdy take less money than the market value for a top player at the position? Unless he completely falls apart next season, odds are his extension will exceed Love’s.

It seems like Mc Carthy is rising in the draft (to the point of being a top 10 pick), but if he is there, I could see the 49ers taking him.

But he didn't win it. And a mediocre QB hasn't won the Superbowl in 6 years(Foles). Don't you believe that's a pattern?

For some reason, folks saying Purdy's cap number for 2025 will go up then tho; similar to Jalen Hurts situation, tho Hurts did have a 5th year. Whenever they renegotiate it, 2024 is the last dirt-cheap cap Purdy season, is what I've read.
