I guess it depends what you give up to get him. If it's a conditional draft pick then you get to see how he performs in your system before committing.

Right but isn't even the 4th year of a rookie contract still a good amount? He isn't going to be free as released if traded.

NFL QB salaries are in a strange position right now.

As of last year.

12 quarterbacks make $40 million or more.
Only 4 quarterbacks make $30-$40 million.
Only 3 make $20-$30 million.

So, Fields at $12.5 million for 2 years is actually a bargain if he's actually good though not as good as Caleb Williams for cheaper for 4-5 years.

After that, you'd have to make a hard decision but the franchise tag still exists for that third year and there is a chance they could get him on a deal like Geno Smith anyways.

I believe he's being paid about $8M this year and his 5th year option would be $21M. You're essentially rolling the dice for $15M a year for 2 years. That's relatively cheap. Especially when you don't have cap space or better options.

Let's compare. The Packers benefitted for 2-3 years from the additions of both Amos and Julius Peppers.
How have the Bears done with Jimmy Graham, Robert Tonyan, ESB, Ha-Ha, Patrick and Getsy??

Starting free agency with $70 million in cap room, $17 plus million will be needed to sign Johnson, need some space for rookies, and some for late additions, so maybe $40-$45 million to sign the guys you want to keep and bring in outside guys.

Using Spotrac for the expectant salary numbers.

A top Center will cost you quite a bit, the top guy is coming off an ACL, so not sure if you want to risk that signing, but even a second-tier guy like James or Cushinberry will not come cheap.

You need a WR, don't think you are breaking the bank by signing Higgins or Evans, have heard Curtis Samuel a few places.

Really need a TE that can stretch the D, Noah Fant would be interesting.

Need a FS, maybe a guy like Xavier Mckinney will be available, likely $10 million or more, looks like several top guys with be franchised.

Hearing they like Hunter at DE, but he's expected to be a $20 cap hit, do you take a shot at Chase Young, who will be a bit cheaper?

Corpse?? Peppers had 25 sacks & 8 forced fumbles in his 3 seasons with the Pack. Hell, he had 11 sacks in the season after he left.

Hard pass on Chase Young.

I hate that FA comes up before the draft.

Brian Burns should be their 1st target (outside of Jaylon).. Young should only be considered if he’s willing to sign a generous contract and Burns isn’t available. My issue with FA this year in a lot of areas the Bears could go is the age of players (like Evans and Jones).. these guys are going to eat up big cap space and theyre at the end of their prime. To me it doesn’t make sense to bring them in and waste a couple of those seasons while a new QB develops.

It’s why I think the Bears should address each side of the ball separately. Top of the draft (1st couple rounds) on offense -free agency on defense with a focus on signing younger players in the 24-26 year old age range.

Think they sign and draft a center, nothing on the roster right now with long term starting potential.

You are not getting Chris Jones or Madubuike, so no obvious stud to fill your 3 tech spot, they likely look to the new DC to develop Dexter and Pickens, Dexter continues to be a tantalizing prospect with natural size and power, still need technique work, but could be a monster in the middle.

DE is an interesting call, break the bank and go with two stud DE's at the cost of the rest of your roster, or bring in a pass rush guy, Walker is solid against the run, so could see a rotation there with a vet.

FS is a key slot to fill, Eddie Jackson was solid in coverage, but soft against the run, do think they need a veteran, but again, top guys are costly.

Think they are drafting a WR, maybe at #9, but they do need another vet, see the need for a WR2 and WR3, a bigger guy and a dependable slot guy.

TE is a big need in this offense, can see them spending some FA paper to fill that spot.

Could use a swing tackle and depth at guard, likely via the draft.

Johnson won't take up that much cap space if they can sign him to a long-term deal

That is true. 11 sacks is more than the fabled Rashan "The Contract" Gary has ever had in a single season

Adrian Amos absolutely shit the bed in the Championship game against the Bucs. And your overall defense sucked last year by your own admission. So...

Ah yes, the championship game where first round draft pick Jordan Love heroically completed five passes of hot chocolate to teammates as he watched his team lose from the sidelines. Really smart move for a win now team.

The #9 pick could get you a haul if one of the QB's drop, you could get a few QB hungry teams bidding against each other and pick up a good haul for just moving down a few slots, seems there are solid WR prospects into the middle of the first round, would be nice to pick up a second or third as your roster is paper thin at several positions on offense.

I'm not seeing what you guys are seeing from the center with 3 last names. I LOVE the power and nastiness, but the lack of speed and lateral quickness may be a problem. There are a couple of guys that I'm liking slightly more than Jackson Powers-Johnson.

I've seen this floated around by the cult but no source. ESPN has the bears 4th or 5th in pass block win rate. Again, Fields takes north of 3 sacks per game which is way above league average while Bagent behind the same line is sacked a league average amount of times or less. This is the same trend we saw at OSU. It's clear the issue is Fields holding on to the ball. Really dumb discourse in this city.
