It's a 5th round pick. Who cares? He didn't have to risk the guy being traded to another team for a 6th or signing somewhere else as a free agent. Bates was a guy that he targeted.

Puka Nacua was a 5th rounder. Bates is not some diamond in the rough OL. He's a generic swing dude you can find in FA or develop. Poles is compounding the mistake he made when he failed to structure Bates offer the right way. He needs to calm down and stop turning into Ryan Pace/Josh Lucas with the trading picks thing.

I think it's you that may need to calm down, my friend. The Bears will have 5th and 6th round picks to make in this draft. If I'm wrong, you can beat me up after the draft.

Guess it depends on if you trust a cheap generic swing guy to fill in at G or C over a 4th or 5th round rookie? If you have a rookie starting QB and several other rookies receiving significant playing time on offense, you likely want a few experienced vets in the mix. An upgrade over Patrick, who was a Getsy guy that was supposed to be your interior swing guy, do not have issues with this move if it comes with the corresponding signing of a starting center, you then have significantly upgraded your center position.

The cheap generic swing guy has already proven he can’t play, whereas the rookie has the potential to both suck and not suck.

It seems they keep targeting these Guard/Center hybrids to solve their center position woes, rather than just finding a really good center via the draft or free agency.

Lets hope this is their veteran that can help out as the guy they draft in the 2nd or 3rd round develops.

They really need a legit monster center.

I think they're going big in free agency. They need someone to fill in for Jenkins and Davis when they get injured this year. Having a player that can fill in at 3 positions means you can use roster spots on other guys.

Borom will likely be gone because of his automatic pay increase. That means they'll need another swing tackle too.

The Bills are pretty much cutting their entire team minus Josh Allen. I think Poles jumped the gun. The Bills GM should be fired for the Von Miller contract though.

Poles could have gotten a Pro Bowl center about the same age as Bates and who started ahead of him for that same 5th round pick

They can get him for less. They still got the swing interior lineman

I never said the cap doesn't matter at all. Bad signings are never a good thing (see Von Miller). However, the salary cap continues to be malleable. The Bills (and every other NFL team) can keep whoever they (really) want. My comment - that you seem incapable of comprehending - was simply pointing out that the yearly dire predictions about how a team will have to be blown up because they are "$40 million over the cap" never come to fruition. A recent example was Nas saying the Falcons can't target Cousins because of their cap situation. A year ago the Saints wouldn't even be able to field a full team...then they signed Carr. Let me know when the Bills are forced to cut someone that can't be replaced. Despite the number of names, the best players they cut include a kick returner and a guy coming off an Achilles injury.

Mocks are fun to read but when they throw multiple trades in it's like listening to unscreened calls on Boers and Bernstein.

I don't think I said they couldn't. I understand even the Chargers could target him. It was more about it being foolish for a team with $37M in cap space paying a 35+ year old quarterback $45M a year guaranteed when Fields is cheaper and they have other holes to fill.

Would the Bills have cut all these players if they didn't have cap problems?

They are also going to have to let a really good #2 WR walk in FA because they have no capspace

Bills are in cap hell, it happens when you have to pay a franchise QB, trying to acquire tons of pics to fill the spots of the vets they are releasing.

Watched Bates a bit and you can see why Poles likes him, athletic guy that fits in an outside zone scheme, an upgrade over Patrick, but that is not saying much.

Bears are spending very little on the oline, Jenkins, Wright, and Jones are all on rookie deals, so you can bring in a vet with a $4 million cap hit with no problem, you also do not know if Jenkins will be able to stay healthy and merit a second contract, so you get a guy that gives you a ton of positional flexibility. Morse is in his 30's, think they go younger there via FA.

Looks as if you can find upgrades at C, DE, and FS in FA, but the draft looks like the place to find offensive talent, especially at WR and OT. It will just depend on if Nabers or Odunze are still there at #9, seeing Nabers go to the Giants at #6 in several mocks, but Odunze seems to be slotted at #9, so should still be there, but think you want one of those guys if you can get them.
