Yeah, I admire the strategy, I guess, but if it ain't working, they should have abandoned it.

I don't think any adjustments would have helped them, but it might have slowed the onslaught. UConn is fucking awesome. I don't know how they lost a game.

Most fun Illini season in quite a while, though.

You’re right, it was a very fun exciting ride. Beating UConn was always a long shot. Underwood defiantly looked right in the camera and said he didnt care if they had 100 blocks, they were driving in there no matter what. That’s madness.

^

What you and ltg said.

Still a great run. UConn looked as good as one of the teams from the 80s. Mercy!

Shannon was a no show. Hawkins too.

Not so much Hawkins, but Shannon for sure. Dainja didn't do much. So it goes.

The 2022 team (or was it 2021?) was significantly better, and they did nothing, so I am happy with this season.

Dainja didn't play really. I won't ever fault a guy for not producing when he only played 6-7 minutes. And Hawkins didn't give them anything either. The only reason the game was close early is because of the play of Domask. He had 15 of their first 23 points. All while the game was still a game.

I probably don't disagree with much of that.

Caller Bob believed this to be an example of "great coaching strategy"

You're both right, but Illinois played in such a way as to ensure their own destruction.

Nah provide thoughts on an actual basketball game for once. Not what someone else thought about the game. I know it's tough to do when you have difficulty with watching.

Don’t kid yourself. Other than Clingan, UConn was horrible in the 1st half. Illinois was just extraordinarily bad throughout.

Illinois played hard and tough, but their approach to the game sucked. And Underwood's comment about "letting him block a 100 shots" was just stupid. And allowing Hawkins to get punished like that was just stupid too.

Insane indeed.

Coleman was the Illini player who most improved over his career.

One difference being that at halftime UConn identified what was wrong and fixed it. Illinois likely was going to lose this game but to go out in the second half stubbornly doing all the things that didn’t work in the first half is upsetting. The one thing that worked was Domask backing people in, breaking the double team and getting easy baskets. They had to abandon that almost immediately because of bad personnel decisions and getting wrecked inside for 8 consecutive minutes to start the half.

Hurley switched the matchup so that it was no longer a mismatch while Underwood kept the very same mismatch with Hawkins on Clingan. And Hurley went right at it. As he should have

Those remarks underwood made during that first-half time out were alarmingly ignorant.

Underwood's gotta get someone on the bench to help him with that sort of preparation and decision-making. It's like he can't see what changes need to be made (or at least tried). That Loyola game is even a better example of this.

You don't ever watch games. That's why your thoughts are often idiotic. Such as the one which claims that Underwood doesn't deserve blame. Even if s team is more talented, it still doesn't excuse stupid coaching. .

Well Illinois is gonna look a lot different next year but I like some of their young talent. I don’t think they are going to crater next year. There will be 4 more portal guys coming in probably and they will remain competitive.

He's an improvement over Groce (and late-term Weber), though. Groce pretty much took a decade out of the program's existence. And as much as I have loved this season...he's got that questionable strategy.

Decent recruiter, but he got lucky with Shannon and Domask.

I’m sorry, but the fact that he’s better than Croce isn’t satisfactory. They should draw a better than average coach. I’m not sure that he even meets that level in the Big10.

My Guy Tim Anderson (assistant coach)was responsible for delivering Shannon. And also Ty Rodgers and Morez Johnson next year too. They all were products of the Meanstreets AAU program where he used to coach. Tim's a good dude and wired up on the local hoops scene as a native Chicagoan and former coach. He has a line on all of the top kids on Meanstreets given his connection to Tai Streets and the Meanstreets program.

Underwood's gotta get someone on the bench to help him with that sort of preparation and decision-making. It's like he can't see what changes need to be made (or at least tried). That Loyola game is even a better example of this.

Your premise also includes the unfortunate answer.

He's an improvement over Groce (and late-term Weber), though. Groce pretty much took a decade out of the program's existence. And as much as I have loved this season...he's got that questionable strategy.

Decent recruiter, but he got lucky with Shannon and Domask.

I thought I heard TSJ was headed to Michigan. I am glad Illinois was in the mix.

I hope Anderson doesn't get the Jimmy Collins treatment.

I’m sorry, but being glad they were in the mix is not acceptable. That’s how you get to be an occasional challenger. The standard needs to be higher.
