And that great document took a Civil War, several post war amendments, further Congressional actions, and Supreme Court rulings just to give equal treatment and voting rights to women and minorities.

So it is not an easy leap to go from what has existed throughout history to where the U.S. is today.

I am currently reading the Loom of Time, which directly addresses the inability of democracy to take root in the Middle East. One big reason is that most countries there have artificial borders, so no one group is able to garner a majority to get consensus on rule. It says the only forms of government that have ever worked there is empire or monarchy.

It took our country hundreds of years and becoming a world leader to moderate a few things. Some European Americans struggle with the reality that their views may be minority views in some corners of the world. Different isn't always evil or bad.
