There is going to be a lot of "Why aren't people watching the WNBA? 10 million people watched her in college? Why are WNBA ratings getting beat by reruns of The Goldbergs?"

course it’s going to be a flash in the pan, just like everyone sho thought that people would start watching women’s soccer after our wonderful gals won the World Cup when Brandi Chastain ripped her shirt off.

I have a feeling CC’ s WNBA teammates will be less tolerant of her unneccesary 35’ jump shots than her Iowa teammates were. Sheer volume of shots got her through the tourney this year. Not sure how that will translate with her new team.

She'll give them enough layups they can clang off the backboard like she did in college.

That is undoubtedly true to some degree, but it's also true that the WNBA has experienced a dramatic increase in television viewership over the past few years:
Quote:
WNBA ratings by year
2023: 505,000 avg. viewers – (ESPN, ABC, ESPN2)
2022: 372,000 avg. viewers – (ESPN, ABC, ESPN2)
2021: 306,000 avg. viewers – (ESPN, ABC, CBS)
2020: 205,000 avg. viewers – (ESPN, ABC, ESPN)

Probably correlates with gambling being legalized around the country.

For it to succeed the games need to mean something to people. A WNBA title means shit to almost everyone, the Fever or Sky winning means shit to almost everyone, setting a WNBA record means shit to almost everyone. The ratings were high because college basketball means something, at leas a little bit, to a larger portion of the population. The colleges themselves mean something to people, the tournament means something to people and the history of the sport has a little bit of meaning to people. Olympic soccer means something because of the name on the front of the jersey. That womens national team got so much heel heat that the name on the back starting to mean something. No one gives a fuck about those players in their regular season league though.

might also correlate to the unjustified level of elevation the sport received in advertising on ESPN, ABC and CBS.

i think a WNBA jam would sell well. whoever owns the IP could make a quick buck off the current interest in the game.

spent a lot of time playing nba jam and nba showtime. simple to play yet required practice to master.

You know you've arrived when they're fantasizing about your pubic hair. Pay that woman her money.

Legend has it the Pistons were the best team in NBA Jam because they were programmed to only shoot layups because all the block animation were for dunks. WNBA teams would be undefeatable.

Judging by everything I have seen, the last thing I would guess about this girl is clean shaved. She fits the bush profile better than any slut from the 70s. I'll honestly be surprised if she doesn't peg her BF constantly. Sad to know we may never know.

I'm stunned that Bernstein hasn't sufficiently twisted Mitch's arm to sign Angel Reese to appear weekly on their little radio show. She would fit Dan's ideal listener demographic of liberal black female and LGBT-friendly. Blockbuster segment ratings await.

Likely.

Honestly, I hope it is more than a flash in the pan for those women who play. Hopefully the WNBA grows to a point where they actually make money and the league makes a profit. Until then though, let's stop with the "OMG..."X" man makes this much, while "X" woman makes SO much less". How much more do the highest paid female models make than their male counterparts?

Professor Flakey does something similar whenever he is able to interview "Mr. Reinsdorf"

Yeah, like I said, this is an organic moment for women's basketball. People actually watched to be entertained rather than out of guilt or because someone like Julie DiCaro shamed them into watching.

The WNBA has never run in the black. It's a welfare league supported by the men that are being accused of receiving "unfair" pay.

I suspect Clarkmania will turn out to be as short-lived as Linsanity. But who knows?

It will take some doing to move the WNBA beyond a niche sport watched mainly by lesbians. I guess it could happen. But basketball isn't really a sport that has been embraced by women. You don't see a bunch of women, let alone straight women, playing hoops recreationally.

But again, I don't think anyone should begrudge these women their success and there's no doubt this year's women's tournament was a success.
