I have two nieces who are graduating from high school this year, and neither went to prom. For those of you with children, is prom still a thing, or does no one care?

What could possibly go wrong with this thread.

I didn't go to prom and neither did my 2 sons. To my knowledge none of us feels like we missed a thing.

My wife went and thus wishes our sons did too.

Don’t be a nerd. Go to prom. Tie an onion to your belt and do the damn thing.

My last experience with prom was 20ish years ago but I can’t imagine the world has changed that much.

We have a big prom every year here. Then there is an after prom event where they go ride go karts, play laser tag, arcade, etc.

Judging by all my fiends' Facebook posts, most kids are still going, despite it costing an insane amount of money. My HS was a bit on the rich side, but it's $170 per person this year for prom (at the fucking Field Museum). They even had a payment plan. I didn't go my Senior year because I was a brooding doofus, but I went the 2 years after I graduated.

Level headed as always. My nieces disappoint me. If you don't have a date, that's cool, you should still go.

It is massive around here. Treated like weddings by a lot of people. I am just thankful they have it before we get into the state series so we don't have to worry about it.

There is a lot of organized stuff after prom now. It's a good idea and seems to work okay.

Couldn’t believe what it costs to rent a tux these days ($259 for my son’s prom tux).

That’s ridiculous. I suppose that’s to prevent kids going to various house parties after? Pretty lame and controlling. We had an event like that but it was after graduation and it was optional (as it should be ).

What if a student has their prom ticket, goes to prom, then skips the go-kart/arcade event? Can they show up for 5 minutes, then leave?

Opinions vary. I think it is great.

A student cannot skip out because we all go together in buses. So they have no way of leaving.

That sucks. You can mens warehouse it for $500 or so, but the kid will grow out of it quickly :/

Senior prom was a blast. We went to Six Flags the next day.

So far so good. No pics yet from a poster that put teenagers pics in a prom thread before.

Young Crest went three years ago, but it wasn't a crazy expensive thing. They did a late night boat ride on the lake thing afterward.

Lake Geneva has since outgrown it, but we used to have our prom at the Riviera Ballroom over the lake. Picturesque for sure, but we had to do the "Grand March" down the ballroom steps where they announced the girls and their escorts while the whole town came to watch. A week later, I walk down the driveway to get the mail and my neighbor, whose children were around 3 and 5 at the time, tells me that I looked good at prom and that I really outkicked my coverage with my date, who goes to their church. She was absolutely right, but she didn't have to tell me.
