JORR...you're my guy, but you're way off here. Radiohead and Wilco are a lot of things, but Dad-Rock is not one of them. You're too punk / indie to really know Dad-Rock. You can't hear Dad-Rock.

Wilco is absolutely 100% dad rock

It was coined in Pitchfork's review of Sky Blue Sky, and the reviewer feels bad about it now. As well he should, because Sky Blue Sky turned out to be one of their better albums.

Thought about adding a Wilco tier list but it would have been too much brow-furrowing just to say that that run of Star Wars, Schmilco, and Ode to Joy was dogshit and I'm still kind of amazed that they found themselves again without any personnel changes. Let it suffice to say that 1996-2011 was about as great a 15-year run of albums as any band's ever had.

That's part of the Dad Rockness of it. Yeah, they're an accomplished professional rock band, but at this point they come off as a bunch of dads who are friends and jam in the garage ("The Loft") on the weekends. You can't kick your friends out of a band the way you did Ken Coomer and Jay Bennett. The barbecue at John & Crissy's place would be pretty uncomfortable.

That's a bold claim. I'll have to keep pondering it, but I would say Dylan's run from Freewheelin' to Street Legal was better. I was also going to suggest Bowie, but "only" twelve years elapsed between Hunky Dory and Let's Dance.

Bowie and Neil Young both had an immaculate 1970s+. I don't care for much Dylan after Desire. Being There through The Whole Love are all, if not perfect, each somewhere between a 9 and a 10 to me.



I think that's where we can say maybe "dad rock" wasn't the wrong appellation for Sky Blue Sky. That was the album that locked in the lineup to this day after years of Tweedy jettisoning guys from his nom de band for reasons artistic and otherwise. And to be fair, the first three albums that lineup did were all really good, then Sue Tweedy got sick and they couldn't put it all back together again for almost a decade.

Dad Rock has to transcend the country. The majority of people outside the chicagoland area have no idea who this wilco band is. I wouldn't know who the hell they were if not for this site.

Yacht Rock> Dad Rock though a convincing case cold be made that yacht rock is in fact the definition of current dad rock.
