Many of the best women athletes here grow up playing soccer. The best male athletes don't.

I'm not looking to field an entire league. I find it hard to believe that we can't develop 18 players that can at least be competitive in a sport that most everyone is exposed to growing up.

It is a rich person's sport in the US. Plus it is behind basketball, football, baseball in popularity. Maybe even hockey.

Or, if you’re Grant Fisher, you ditch it to medal in the Olympic 10k. What a monster race, even stumbling on the rail. Watching the last lap was like the far turn in a hot pace horse race.

How is soccer is a rich person's sport ? All you need is a ball and a field of grass .

This is why the state of Illinois should give the Bears $2 billion for the Soldier Field renovation.

I believe a former CFMB poster has an Olympian daughter. It could have been junior Olympics.

Because youth soccer, like youth sports more broadly, has been privatized. Getting access to high-level coaching at a young age means that your parents likely have to pay a minimum of 5K/year to play on a travel soccer team. Without that coaching, kids are less likely to be able to play at an elite level.

The internet and apps like DribbleUp have obviously made it easier for less affluent kids to succeed. But it's harder to do so because those kids need either a parent or sibling to practice with them--or they just need to be highly self-motivated.

Just think of it as an affront to U.S. hegemony that Trump will get rid of when he is president.

Clearly girls in the US are following the steps of the Red Hippo. Gymnastics and Soccer. She has set the example for girls everywhere.

I’m sure that advanced youth soccer can get expensive, but I’d imagine baseball and hockey are more costly.

My understanding is the high end “academy” soccer programs will run you about 15-20k per year.

What? Why should they move out of the way? It's a race.

The hope is a D1 scholarship.

So you spend 5-6 years doing that, get showcased a few times a year around the country and hope it pays off.

Worlds strongest man should be an Olympic sport.

You could even break the events down in individual competitions like gymnastics. Gold medal for the Goodyear tire lift, leg throwing, guy who can pick up big round stones, etc.

After watching handball and field hockey I don't see any reason why tetherball and hot dog eating shouldn't be Olympic sports.
