You both understand that you're admittedly editing people's posts with neither a tag "edited by ______ " nor any sort of explanation, right? You can see why that might seem a bit fishy to some people (especially when you have the ability to be transparent about it but choose to shadow edit stuff)? You're giving the impression of "no moderation" when moderation is indeed happening.

That doesn't typically happen. But if you dox someone on the site you should assume your post will be edited.

If what dolphin did is a big deal I can delete the post completely. In fact, maybe I should delete the guy's account.

It's (I guess?) your board, you do what you want - just saying that "typically doesn't happen" shouldn't be a bullet point in how you moderate a message board. It either does or does not - if it's appropriate to edit someone's post, do it with transparency...not in the shadows. I think a note would be great, but at minimum I know this board software allows for a "last edited by..." tag to be automatically applied if/when a post is edited...so, do that?

I wrote, very openly with a big Bernstein photo attached to it as a highlight, that I edited it and he knew exactly why.

I've never edited anything else ever. Don't post people's birth names. That's a hard and fast rule across every message board I've ever posted at, so much so, that it shouldn't need to be verbalized. But there it is.

I deleted/edited the second name reference, and since it was the same reason the first one got edited I didn't feel it needed an explanation. Never figured anyone would complain about this place being over-moderated

First, I would never call this "my board." It's our board. All of ours. (I get very happy whenever I see you post.)

Seacrest and I are simply acting as stewards along with a few other carefully selected moderators, none of whom has ever acted impulsively or unfairly.

To my knowledge during our stewardship of the board there has never been a post edited where the actual content or meaning was altered in a manner to make it appear a member said something he did not. At one time Seacrest would remove an offending post and replace it with "...", but there were complaints and I don't think he has done that in awhile although it should have been very transparent what occurred in those instances.

I get what you are saying about transparency though. It would be great if the software automatically added a note and we probably should make it clear when we have deleted an actual name from some asshole's post. It just doesn't happen that often. And when it does, it's usually more than transparent as the jerkoff who got edited almost always starts whining about it.
