Ogie can answer this better than I can, but I believe Portnoy started Barstool as a newsletter in college and did a lot of it himself. Then it grew into a website, then it was Portnoy, Big Cat, and KFC who were kind of the big names of the podcast, then once all the associated shows got going, he sort of became an impresario figure and moved away from most of the everyday stuff.

I've always said there's an alternate universe where Portnoy is at Deadspin and Drew Magary presides over a sports/crassness empire.
