Yeah, there's a lot about this launch that seems half-cocked to me.

For instance, the Milwaukee media market has, at long last, been added to the Blackhawks' territory. That's good, because the whole reason we don't have Milwaukee in the league is because Bill Wirtz claimed it was his and did fuck-all with it. However, once you're part of the territory, you can't get that team via the out-of-market package, but there's not to my knowledge a channel in Milwaukee that has agreed to carry the Chicago Sports Network, and I don't know why they would, because the Bulls and White Sox would be blacked out in Milwaukee. (The Cubs and Sox are allowed Kenosha but it gets spotty from there.) Thus, Hawks fans in southeastern Wisconsin are in a donut hole whereby they cannot subscribe to watch their team nor can they watch them locally for free or on cable. This is the same dilemma MLB has where six teams have claimed the entire state of Iowa (Royals, Cardinals, Twins, Brewers, Cubs, White Sox), requiring cable providers to carry six different RSNs, one of which, Kansas City, I don't believe is even offered to headends east of Des Moines. This was a "somebody's gotta do something about this problem" like 20 years ago and we've not only not made progress but are moving backward.

There's also the fact that the DTC offerings are limited or nonexistent even in Chicago. The Dallas Stars have gone entirely online (appropriate for their Extremely Online fanbase) and aren't even putting their games over the air--you watch on the app and that's it. I have serious reservations about that model, too, but the Hawks/Bulls/Sox are at the other extreme. If the whole idea here is that people don't watch television they way they used to anymore, then you have to meet people where they are with more versatile offerings than linear, rabbit-ears TV. Even for cable subscribers, I think there's a baseline expectation to be able to pause, rewind, fast-forward, and record live sports. That does not exist via antenna. That's the real move backward.

The only explanation I have for why they're doing this now while cable RSNs are still alive and well in the Northeast is that they have access to numbers that we don't and that the numbers show that Chicago, always a latecomer to cable, is really checked out on it, and that further paywalling their games on linear cable has become even more of a liability than anyone could imagine, and that they had to pull the trigger now and get their shit together later if they wanted anyone to see any of their product.

HOWEVER, the record for regional sports networks botching the launch is really, really not good. The Twins tried to get out from under Fox Sports and do their own channel. Failed miserably, ran back in a matter of months. The Royals tried to start their own channel. No one carried it, no one watched, they went back to Fox, too. The Charlotte Bobcats started a channel, no one carried it, failed in a year. CSN Houston was a complete disaster and went bankrupt. I think the pandemic saved Marquee, because if you remember, Comcast wouldn't pick them up throughout spring training, and if the season had started on time with no carriage, it would have been all but dead on arrival.

Actually not new. It's the same old RSN that Pennsylvania and West Virginia have been getting for like 35 years, they just keep changing the name. The Red Sox bought it when they bought the Penguins; Warners was unloading or shutting down the old AT&T Sportsnet channels and I presume that Fenway got it for a song.

It is all messed up. I purchase the MLB package so I can watch the Cubs. I cannot see them when they play the Brewers because the package is blacked out, and Hulu does not carry Bally’s. I tried the DTC Bally’s package, but it was expensive for the few games I wanted to watch. So I just end up listening on the At Bat app, which does not black out games.

At one time, yeah. They were FSNs that were owned by Liberty Media instead of Fox, so eventually they came up with a new name. Then they wound up under Warner/AT&T somehow and came with Warners in the Discovery merger, who had no use for them. Most of them are still around under new ownership, but I think the Intermountain West one died with the Rockies, Golden Knights, and Utah Hockey Club all going OTA/DTC.

This is why I really think the entire regional model is going to go away in favor of leaguewide streaming. Phoenix, Denver, and San Diego have already moved to MLB-produced telecasts and they won't be the only ones. What I'm struggling with here is that it basically eliminates baseball--or any sport, really--as something you just kinda put on to have on, or channel-surf your way onto. Now, you have to make a conscious decision to commit to putting on a game. I am not a Chicago Fire fan. Might I become one if I had nothing to do, landed on a game, and enjoyed it? Maybe. But I can't do that because I can only watch them by subscribing to Apple TV+ and I don't have Apple TV+, and even if I did, I wouldn't say "I am going to put on a Chicago Fire game." I would probably just binge-watch the friendly soccer man program. And if that's the future of watching sports on TV, I don't know what that means for these teams' places in the mainstream.

Amazing how the Hawks were one of the best run franchises in sports from 2008-2016 and since have gone back to shooting themselves in the dick at every possible turn.

To be fair, there was some shady stuff going on in that time period that only came to light after that time period. But yes, the on ice performances and marketing were amazing back then.

They said you have to do a rescan of your antenna after the channel launches because they're tweaking the signal to get the subchannels up from 480 to 720.

So, it's not on Youtube TV, no app....

I don't think I'll be watching much this year....I don't watch the Blackhawks much to begin with and while I do enjoy the Bulls, they are going to be awful. National NBA will probably be better anyways.

Would it be possible the teams just renegotiate with Sinclair for a little less money?

I'm sure the DTC stuff works well for the Padres because they're a good team that owns that market, but if the Marlins have to go that route..

We have YouTubeTV too but cable packages were much nicer than having YoutubeTV + cycling through Max, Paramount+, Disney+, Peacock, and Amazon Prime to see the same stuff that just showed up before on cable.

I should have stated, this comp is apples to apples. Both Dish and Youtube TV are the higher tier basics, i.e the tier to include NFL network and other sports. Neither with paid add ons like HBO, etc.
