I know of zero examples where Tafoya was accused of dog whistling while doing sideline reporting, but, to Dan, they are the same because he believes they have the same politics and are the worst people alive because they think differently than him.

Does Tafoya have a reputation for being a racist during games?

Does anyone else have issues with Smoltz like Dan does?

Is this about anything other than Dan wanted to invoke politics?

A lot to unpack from the easily-triggered BD, again. I picture you doing a Jason Goff esque "THERE IT IS!" every time Dan invokes the nuanced political opinion of "racism, not a fan of it"

Unlike BD I don't listen to the entirety of the show twice daily, but did hear a bit about Smoltz during transition to afternoons.

The example of dog whistling during the broadcast by Smoltz was his grumbling over Profar's celebration of his home run robbery. He cited other anecdotes of Smoltz not liking that "style" and how they all seemed to be directed at darker skinned players. You should find it reassuring that none of Spiegel, Harris, or Holmes were on board to this extent with Dan's aspersions

Now I didn't hear the bit about Michelle Tafoya. Like BD's fellow member of "perpetually aggrieved old white" caucus, BadRogue, implied, I don't think Tafoya ever dog whistled during her sideline reports.

But outside of work, Tafoya outed herself as MAGA and leveraged it into a grift, though I can't imagine it's as lucrative as a job at NBC. So that's likely why Smoltz is grouped with her, as he's (I think?) known to hold that opposite nuanced political opinion of "racism is fine, just fine".

Now, is Dan injecting that background into how he hears Smoltz? Or he merely calling it like he sees it, where that background coming through in Smoltz's broadcasts?

So you can't actually defend or explain Dan's irrational take?

thanks

Dan compared Smoltz to Tafoya in his on the job role criticism of his supposed dog whistling. You can't explain how they are the same or give any examples, and your only retort is a personal attack. No need to respond with another non-answer.

Well like I said I didn't hear the part about Tafoya. And I can't trust you to accurately reiterate it.

I'm not trying to defend Dan's opinion, but explain to you what he said.

He brought it up again today and maybe that helped you with context? Essentially everyone was questioning Dan saying Smoltz's animosity towards 'certain types of players' was racially motivated, and Dan said 'ask people who work with him'

Like you, nobody on the air will take him up on that. But unlike you they weren't upset enough about it to defend the guy either.

Is Smoltz allowed to not like showboating players without him being “ racist “ ? Would Lil Danny even fucking care if the majority of the show-boating players Smoltz were criticizing were white instead of Latino whose unbridled enthusiasm for the game must not be curbed? Talk to guys who worked with him? Who the fuck does Lil Danny know that’s worked with him? Just easier to call him racist like he did with LaRussa with zero evidence.

Yes, and that's what the rest of the hosts were asking as well. But you can't not like showboating players AND be republican, or MAGA, or however BD thinks is opposing political viewpoint of Dan Bernstein

Of course, you didn't hear the part about Tafoya. Convenient, and was the main issue I had with Bernstein's ridiculous comparison for their on-the-job commentary.

You shouldn't try to defend Dan's opinion unless you're a piece of shit. I don't think you are, I don't know you, but I think you're just trying to debate/take a very difficult opinion.

Once again, you attempt to deflect my making this about me. I don't care about John Smoltz. I don't listen to national games. I just think it's pretty off-putting to draft whistle blowing into baseball commentary and compare it to a now known GOP "grifter" who he doesn't like, but provides no examples.

Of course, Dan has "people" who tell him that Smoltz is really awful. Sort of aligns with his opinion. If you believe that, I have a bridge to sell you.

Dan thinks Smoltz is a piece of shit. That's ok, you think Dan is a piece of shit. You each have your reasons to apply that filter on their work.

But you keep saying there were no examples like this just came up out of nowhere. It came from a very prominent example of Smoltz's commentary with the call of the Jurikson Profar home run. Was it a flimsy example used as a way to say he thinks Smoltz is a piece of shit, oh and by the way Michelle Tafoya is too? Maybe, but it was just the most recent example he brought up others in Smoltz's broadcasting career (though perhaps not with the dogwhistling accusation)

I can see how it was off-putting, the other hosts were put off by it too! But i interpreted it more like "yeah, sucks we have piece of shit racists in prominent positions" whereas you were more "I can't believe someone is accusing these likely pieces of shit to be racist"

Dan's part of the reason baseball is dying. Stragetizing through a computer gets him hard and gets the sporting part of game treated like a red headed stepchild.

There's also the myth that the bat flipping and twirling and gesticulating helps the game. It neither helps or hurts. Injecting racism at every perceived sleight though probably hurts.

Does Dan have metrics that show dancing around the field is a real ratings getter?

Finally, has Dan turned into the biggest twat in Sports Radio history?

The playoffs have been a lot of fun. It will be sad if baseball keeps declining. The foreign born players have brought tremendous excitement to the game. And I love it when the old white red ass guys get pissed about it. Pitchers pump their fists after big strikeouts, and batters watch their balls leave the yard. If you cannot handle it, then you are the one with a problem.

As for Dan, he sucks the fun out of everything. His racist name calling is just a cover for his own prejudices as Beardown rightly pointed out in his thread.

I have zero issues with bat flips, walking to first after a home run, shooting imaginary arrows after a strike out, etc.

I also have zero issues with guys getting drilled after these things happen.

Physically injuring somebody - beta.

Dancing and prancing around - total alpha gigachad.

They’re the alphas that did their manly job and hit a homer. You’re the beta who gave it up and you’re all in your fe-fes and lashing out.

They need to do a helluva lot more than that to even come close. First, the hat and the glove need to go in the air. Second, WWF gesticulations to to his big giant cock,
and finally, a strut or a dance to the dugout.

Lashing out over an inability to process emotion may be the manliest reaction of all.

yeah, this is what dodger nation is 'upset' about...more so, dads who took their kids to the game and had to watch this every other half inning. i have no doubt dodger fans are saying some real nasty stuff to profar and tatis.

smoltz sees this, the broadcast team/fs1 won't show the gesticulations. obviously, smoltz is not a fan...

brings us to daniel from deerfield.

Dan is indeed just a provincial sports radio dude.

Smoltz broadcasts the biggest showcases in the sport. He has way, way more impact on "helping or hurting" baseball. Dan thinks Smoltz hurts baseball when Smoltz injects his personal distaste for something you argue neither helps or hurts. I truly don't think Dan calling that out (plus saying Smoltz is injecting racism) hurts baseball.

However, Dan interjects his enthusiasm for the hijinks which is the other side of the same coin. Noted white showboater Jesse Winker isn't noticed by the twat Bernstein while I'll bet Smoltz does.

On last week's show, Dan said people who like John Smoltz need to die and did equate people who like him to MAGA followers. So, if there was any doubt what this is really about, I think Dan made it clear what his agenda is.

Similar to the Aaron Rodgers story where he want on a long angry rant about how Rodgers fired the coach, joked about RFK being the coach....He presented no evidence as to what Rodgers actually did, just that he's an awful person, etc. Again, no actual evidence, just Dan being angry that Rodgers fired the coach even though the only public information from the Jets is that the owner pulled the plug. I think it's fair to suggest that Rodgers had a role, but it's also taking a leap without any information to come to any conclusions, unless, of course, this isn't really about that, and you can't keep politics out of sports conversation.

Dan lasted a few days before reverting back to Keith Olbermann type takes....

Think Bob Gibson would have had a problem with it or was he just an old red ass white guy ? Joe Morgan ? Dave Stewart ? The excitement foreign players bring to the game is because theyre fucking good not because they flip bats after 2nd inning home runs.

Mike Trout has been the best player of the last decade. Zero excitement. I’ve maybe seen a few dozen of his at bats and never waste my time seeking him out. It is the combination of great play and personality/energy/passion that makes a player exciting.

If you need a great player to jump up and down and act like an idiot after doing his job in order to enjoy the game and find excitement, the problem is you actually.

Gotta have some excitement but a little goes a long way.

Great Post!!! Let's knock our dicks together and yell Fuck.

Just announced Leila will be there twice a week, Tue and Wed

Still the same issues with her that JLN had years ago when starting this thread. Sounds janky and odd chemistry. I'll assume Marshall helps more than Laurence hurt in that department, but the 3 person iteration of the show was never added value IMO

The hardest working person in Chicago (just ask her) adds more hours to her plate. How will she keep up with her 3 minute sports updates in the evening?
