Looks like the Fire might build a new, privately-funded stadium at the 78 Site. The McCaskeys and Reinsdorfs looking in from the outside, holding their micropenises in their Trump-sized hands. SAD!

yup. an actual billionaire doesn't have to run things like a business

Quote:
In an interview with The Athletic after the press conference, Mansueto said the team has toured three sites in Chicago: a lakefront site in the Bronzeville neighborhood that was the former home of the Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center; The 78, a development in South Loop where the Chicago White Sox have proposed building a new stadium; and Lincoln Yards, a development along the north branch of the Chicago River in the Lincoln Park neighborhood on the north side of the city.

Mansueto, the founder, CEO and chairman of Morningstar, with a reported net worth of $7.1 billion, said the team would privately finance a new stadium.

“My personal view is that stadiums are not a great investment,” Mansueto said. “They’re big, costly to maintain, sit empty most of the time. And so to the extent that they create value, most of that accrues to the sports team, not the municipality. So to me, it’s fair that the sports team should own it. Moreover, here in Illinois, in the City of Chicago, our finances are strained. Teachers want more money, law enforcement needs money, pension obligations. Our city and state don’t have the funds, to be candid, and so to me, we would privately finance it.”

Can we get this guy to run for mayor?

The Fire and Red Stars would probably do well at Lincoln Yards.

They can play in any number of backyards and attendance won’t be impacted.

When they first moved out to Bridgeview it was with the assumed plan that it'd be convenient for suburban youth soccer groups

I suppose what they learned that they get more, or at least more useful, attendance from childless city hipsters who buy 2-5 beers

So of those sites maybe go to the South Loop? because actual hipsters aren't totally priced out of those neighborhoods yet, and it doesn't hurt they're historically hispanic either

I think the soccer teams would be perfect for Rosemont. I don’t think they should be taking up real estate downtown.

*unless they’re part of some weird, mixed-used campus

I was honestly surprised that Rosemont didn't make a play for the Red Stars after the whole Bridgeview Riot Fest fiasco. Since their fanbase is a Venn diagram of suburban families and lesbians, the far, far northwest side would be a decent compromise for them. Certainly better than 71st/Harlem.

Ideal situation would still be a stadium at Roosevelt/Clark for the Bears, Fire, and select Red Stars games. Natural grass, roof over the seats, basically a soccer stadium in all but name. Everyone can get there with ease.

It's merely a 'focus'

Cleveland Browns owners Jimmy and Dee Haslam have confirmed they are indeed focusing on a new domed stadium in suburban Brook Park, releasing a statement yesterday saying, “The transformative economic opportunities created by a dome far outweigh what a renovated stadium could produce with around 10 events per year.” The statement also said that “this stadium will not use existing taxpayer-funded streams that would divert resources from other more pressing needs,” which neatly obscures the fact that it would use $1.2 billion in new taxpayer-funded streams that would divert resources from other more pressing needs. And headlines like “It’s official: Cleveland Browns moving to Brook Park” remain premature, since nobody in state or local government has approved the $1.2 billion in tax money yet, so really we’re still just at “Browns owners’ #1 choice is someone giving them $1.2 billion,” and who wouldn’t want $1.2 billion? I bet you could roll around in it real nice.

I don't know much about Cleveland, but just looking at a satellite map they should let them leave without a fight. The city has a stadium (for the Guardians) and an arena in the downtown area. The football stadium is on the lakefront, separated from downtown by parking and highways. Could tear it down and replace it with parkland and it'd likely retain as a tourist destination outside of the 10 events (how many more events would a domed stadium get? like 5 more?), still have the Rock HoF there and other museums.

The Bengals are sniffing around for a new stadium, too: they said they're going to look into putting a dome on the current stadium, which is surely just a pretense for saying "it's cheaper to replace it altogether, why don't you guys just do that." I can't imagine how Ohio has the money to give both teams new domes, let alone or the other.

Surely Mike Brown will be paying for such a thing?!

Now the Browns are suing the city of Cleveland to get the Modell Law repealed. You can't make this stuff up.

To be (somewhat) fair, the Browns stadium is a shithole already - almost as if near-immediate obsolescence was built-in.

Not to mention the lack of parking nearby, and that after all these decades of hosting NFL games, the city and facility apparently still don’t know how to control the mass of people, traffic flow, etc. Trying get out of there after a game or big event is a shitshow.

I don't know the details but I believe it: it's always looked like the goal was just "well, here it is, a football stadium." I get the same vibe from the Bengals and Broncos' places, which were also built in the late '90s.

The Packers were also able to lean on PSLs and those phony-baloney stock sales. The tax for Miller Park was extremely contentious in the WOW counties and almost doomed the whole project.

it's not much more accessible but a little bit? a train station is on the same line but would be closer proximity and more accessible than 18th street is to Soldier Field.

I don't think it's a big enough footprint though for all the parking they'd want, and the track bifurcates the site

also the site itself doesn't matter if the state won't provide funds. outside chance they consider Michael Reese blighted and eligible for TIF financing or whatever, but I don't think that'd close the gap

It's less accessible than Soldier Field, if anything. You can walk from Roosevelt/State to Soldier Field if the weather is nice and you're not morbidly obese. There's no good way to get from the L to Michael Reese. Walk from Cermak/State? Be a lot cooler if I didn't.

Declaring it blighted must be the play. Maybe this is Pritzker working something out in the background.

This is a Hail Mary to get public money. Once it fails they settle on a renovation of Soldier Field that increases seating capacity but leaves the building identical. McCaskeys LOST.

They've got to use the Indiana option here. Going to New Jersey hasn't hurt the New York teams. The city/state seems dead set on any public money for this and then you've got the psychotic Chicago residents that want there to be no buildings visible from a boat on the lake to the point you can't even replace a building with another building without getting sued for years by a bunch of rich people that think they are saving Chicago by ensuring grass and parking lots exist near a bunch of other grass and parking lots.

Lots of land available right by the Chicago skyway.

Not happening.

The old South Works site would be great, but I think they have plans for it already. The Bears won’t move to somewhere they feel is beneath them.

What Indiana option? You think they're going to try Gary again? That didn't work in 1998 when Gary was just a normal hellhole; it won't work now that it got so godforsaken that it's come all the way back around to be being reclaimed by nature. Are they supposed to go to Schererville? No one's driving to Schererville.
