That's quite the collection. What's the market like these days for those?

market always good for old stuff. Condition is not great for most of the cards, but that also opens the door up for some budget collectors to get some historic cards that they thought they would never have a shot at owning.

That’s an awesome and remarkable collection. Really diverse is what I recognized when I scrolled through, and I didn’t even look at anything. Obvious he was a passionate collector, lots of old stuff in there that is as much art as collectible.

Just out of curiosity, when he was alive what did your dad do with such a large and varied collection? Was a lot of it on display? Was a lot of it shelved in his house for easy viewing? Was a lot of it in storage?

that's cool. how does one do this? I have a bunch of old cards. what is the cut of the auctioneers?

My dad was old school. The good cards were in his closet in his study, all in binders by sets. Never got them graded. We had to get them graded for the auction so that’s why a lot of then are slabbed and graded in the auction. His Mickey Mantle rookie just sat in a binder with the other 1952 Topps cards for several decades. Pretty cool though it’s right next to Jackie Robinson in that set.

Before he died he was collecting the T-206 (i think that’s the right name) cigarette cards. Those are the ones with the famous Honus Wagner. My dad didn’t have the Wagner, but he had a few hundred other ones. They are all on the auction as a lot, expected to fetch I think 20k.

He tried getting us into baseball, but hockey became the sport for me and my brother. My dad loved the hockey.

Not sure what the commission is. Hindman’s is doing it for no commission for a couple reasons. One, we had them do the insurance appraisal and that cost us over 10k. Also we had a much bigger auction house (Heritage) wanting the collection so Hindman gave us the offer we couldn’t refuse. They say they will make all their money off he buyer.

That's really cool. One of the biggest issue with graded cards is how do you view/display them. I don't have anything like the collection your father does, but I'm the same way that he is. All of my cards are in old school binders. It's fun for me to just grab a binder and flip the pages. To my that's why I collect what I do, it's part of the fun to collect, but also it's fun to have some enjoyment of them. Like what do people do with a bunch of cards in thick plastic?

What did he do with all of the helmets, jerseys, other non-card type memoribilia? Did he have a massive study? I mean you get more than 3 helmets in a room and that's a shit ton of space you're taking up.

There’s more than one collection in the auction. My dad’s collection is the feature collection. If you enter Orzoff into the search you’ll see the stuff that was his. It’s all cards. None of he helmets/jerseys/framed photos were his.

There's a 1934 Greenberg rookie in there, starting bid is $250. No bids yet, feel free to jump in.

Also a 1955 Koufax rookie with a PSA 6 with bids currently at $1500.

auction is pretty exciting to follow. I was told that the real bidding won't start until the final day (12/9) when every lot closes one by one every 15 minutes. But, even with that knowledge my dad's stuff is still getting lots of bids already. Several lots have already passed the reserve and the low range estimate. lots of bidding wars already. The prize of the collection, the Mantle rookie has an expected value of 15-25k and is already at 18k with double digit bids.

this is pretty cool to watch. Added up all the bids Saturday and it was $104k already. Before the auction I was hoping to hit the 100k mark. Added them up again yesterday and up to $148k.


I was told that the real bidding doesn't even start till the final day 12/9 when all lots close one by one every 10-15 minutes. Starting to think this might end up well over 200k when it's all said and done.

holidays are on the same day this year so either one works. Splitting the 3 ways with my two brothers, but still a nice chunk of change. Especially for a guy who just had to give away every penny he has in a divorce

great stuff. the good news is that regardless of economy, many people with plenty of money will spend on sports related memorabilia.

What does the auction house get to keep? I'm guessing around 10%? Definitely a lot of cool stuff there. I sold my meager collection to a place in Waukegan a few years back and got enough out of it to buy some new golf clubs
