start buying up vacant lots on the outside edge and make parking lots with a shuttle into the infected zone.

sounds like good accountability

It's a double edged sword. On one hand, it's the only good public transportation in the whole country. On the other hand, they are billions in debt, managed incredibly poorly outside of the actual "get you where you want to go on time" part, and it probably eventually has to go bankrupt completely.

I'll grant you that NYC probably has the best public transportation system in the country, but I think D.C.'s subway system is better.
used to be better. They are having real maintenance issues for the last 5-6 years.

Also illegal immigrants burn people alive on it and the city govt is just like “this is the cost of freedom”

Why?

I gotta believe this is somehow tied to that obsession people have with making every American metropolis resemble "walkable" European shitholes. They've gotten the immigrants committing rampant crime down, now they just need to come and take your ca—oops, I mean make it prohibitively expensive to drive your car on public roads.

I don't know about that, since we're only talking about one part of the largest city in the country. New York, Manhattan in specific, is sui generis; it has as little to do with Chicago as it does with noted shitholes Rome and Vienna.

Congestion pricing is not uncommon in Europe

Europe has been in a state of economic malaise for 15+ years now. We don't want to emulate Europe.

I'm completely against this cash grab.

I was merely pointing out that this "mentality" isn't unique to this country.

This would somehow lose money. Then be sold off to a company for pennies on the dollar and make a ton of money. Like the skyway and parking meters.

But you did it with a double negative, which was a dick move.

And vaguely European in its own way.

Like I said in the first post, congestion pricing is bad for Chicago, bad for America. Makes sense for a few square miles of one city.

It will be interesting to see how this goes. What's really the purpose, who it really effects, etc? I don't think it would get me to take the subway though. Good luck to those involved, hope it's not more of the same, but history tends to repeat itself. They love their well intended and not so well intended crap policies that end up shitty.

I paid $54 for about 6 hours of parking in Chicago a few weeks ago. Seems like a lot.

The purpose is to reduce gridlock below 60th Street.

Yeah, that's pretty steep. Once the weather is a little less hostile, it makes much more sense to just take the train in.

Reducing gridlock sounds nice. Are we trying to stop some weird version of climate change? Are they trying to get more money? Aren't you really penalizing normal people? How many businesses are you hurting in the process? How many people are you hurting in the process? Rich people still get to move as they want the rest of us not so much. Maybe the normies have to take public transportation which seems to be filled with lunatics. At this point it's a roll of the dice.

I'm probably not taking the train in or out. I didn't feel super safe at normal hours walking to or from my car either. Keep going down this path. I'm sure it will work.

They are trying to raise revenue. Don’t need to look past that.

I pay $19 for all day as long as I get in before 7. I have days that require mobility so a lot of the time public isn't an option but at that cost, it doesn't make much sense

Yeah, you can find $19/12 hour parking in many places in the Loop. However, coming in from the suburbs, at least in my location (25 minute express train), Metra is the better option.

It's been five years since I commuted to the Loop but I used to get $23 weekday parking via Spothero even with a 10am arrival once my monthly lot on Wells/Adams got knocked down.

Article on today’s WSJ on NYC, and it is working very well. Traffic is way down. They give examples of how much faster it is to get into NYC on various bridges.

Did they mention how that impacts their revenue assumptions?

I did not see anything on that. Taxi drivers are getting hurt because crazy enough less meter time in traffic and longer waits between customers.

If they reduce traffic and provide more money for public transportation, it may make sense. But as has been stated here, NYC is pretty unique in the U.S. for this type of experiment.

One of the more interesting experiments in reducing city traffic was when the San Francisco earthquake of '89 damaged the Embarcadero so badly that they just tore the whole thing down. Improved the situation quite a bit and was much nicer to look at. We can't do that with Lake Shore Drive, though. There's a song about it and everything.

I never rent a car in SF. I find the BART to be fantastic. In NYC, there is no easy way to get from LGA to mid or downtown that way, so I end up cabbing or uber, although I have learned their subway system.

Yeah, BART/Muni seem to be pretty good systems, though I can only imagine the level of antisocial behavior that's gone on there post-pandemic. If even the once-draconian DC Metro has fallen, look out.

We have a good thing going with both Chicago airports directly linked to rapid transit. I had to do SkyTrain to the Subway coming out of JFK, which wasn't a tremendous pain or anything, just an extra fare and another walk and wait.

Yeah it's an express bus between Terminals B and C to 74th and Roosevelt, you can catch the 7 or the E there.
