Uecker did 54 years on the radio for his hometown team and mentored numerous play-by-play guys throughout the majors, one of whom won the Ford Frick in his own right. Hawk was a hired gun who did his same act for the Yankees, thought himself above radio (maybe because he couldn't get away with sitting and pouting), and was always loathed by a good portion of Sox fans. The better comp for Uecker is Ed Farmer.

Hawk sucked. Crotchy POS. One of the worst comments I have ever heard on here. When Hawk passes people will piss on his grave for what a jackass he was.

I don't know if I'd go that far, but he will not be remembered and celebrated like Uecker in Wisconsin. Hawk isn't even from here. He didn't play here. He's just the guy Reinsdorf brought in from the Red Sox after running Harry and Piersall out.

I actually appreciate this one because most of Brick's bad arguments are rooted in the sort of engineer-brained rationalism that nonetheless leads people to say really dumb stuff, like thinking that the Chicago lakefront is being wasted on museums and parks, but the pure sentimental homerism of "Hawk Harrelson was just as good as Bob Uecker" is in its own way refreshing.

That's not true to actual Brewers fans, or baseball fans in general. Someone did the math and figured out that Bob Uecker has called like 3.5% of all major-league games, and as I said, his broadcast booth was an incredible incubator of talent. Who went on to bigger and better things by learning from Hawk Harrelson?

I have a terrible confession to make in this thread, which is that in my childhood, I was in possession of a tape cassette of some outtake from the Brewers booth. The only line I remember some 25 years down the line is Uecker saying "this guy's got a penis the size of all outdoors, Jim." I don't remember who it was about, I don't remember what came next. What's important is that I lost the tape.
