Why is Fred Armisen being given any role in this show? One of the worst cast members of all time.

People like the Californians for some reason, other than Bill Hader laughing through the whole skit.

Opening the 50th anniversary episode of a comedy show with that downer of a musical performance was odd.

Paul Simon is basically retired, that was somewhat of a get.

And they brought back Cecily Strong as well. Why?

It reminds me when I saw Fargo in the theater and it took 7/8 of the movie for the audience to simmer down over the accent. I guess funny talking is like farts.

Having three hours to cover 50 years, there have been a lot of monumental wastes of time on this show, and that was by far the dumbest one.

yeah i actually interpreted it as their way of saying "we find it funny too but..." especially with the captioning.

however, i'm sure some people were crossing their arms in satisfaction ("finally they recognize how mean and racist their humor has been all these years!") also misinterpreting it.

I feel the same way. He's okay, but with the amount of screen time they gave him, you would think he's right up there with the all time greats.

The Bill Hader/Kristen Wiig era that Mulaney wrote for has gotten a lot more consideration as a classic era of the show now that it's a bit more in the rear-view (and once everyone saw how bad it got after they all left). Still, he doesn't compare to Jim Downey, who I think was responsible for every funny sketch for like ten years.


And he only did Update for three and a half (he was still "on the show" after they took him off Update but he barely turned up). But he was the best who ever did it, and judging by how much attention they gave him last night, it seems like everyone has finally come around to that.

Norm was not viewed as the best in real time. A lot of those Weekend Updates were painful, with his deadpan delivery getting greeted with stoney silence, and him staring passive aggressively at the camera until he got laughs.

Good. Norm was part of that stupid (unending) era where everything was cheap applause and barely any laughter.

Downey had a great interview with Conan about a year ago. Good Epstein jokes.
