The Steelers made an offer to Fields to return to the roster. That doesn't mean they made an offer "to be their starting QB".
Yes it does. We know it isn't exactly "fashionable" around these parts to admit this, but it was clear from all involved that they were hoping that he'd resign to be their starting QB
I wouldn't say "hoping". They offered him a contract to return to the roster and probably would have rolled with him if no other options emerged. He got a better offer elsewhere. I like the kid and hope he does well, but the fucking Jets? He would be better off anywhere else. Even as a backup.
Tomlin shitted on him. Offensive Coordinator wanted Fields to start. So did most of the players. Tomlin disregarded all of that in order to stick with washed up Russ.
They weren't going to pay the kid that type of money in order to be a backup. Particularly when they didn't have a cheaper option already on the roster. And I'm not one who gets caught up in the whole "franchise sucks" so why would anyone want to go there mantra. Players make franchises. Franchises don't make players. A few years ago who'd have ever believed that places like Detroit or Buffalo would be "destination spots"? He has a legitimate No. 1 receiver who he is familiar with. Solid backs and a decent Oline. They upgrade the No. 2 receiver and it really gets interesting.
Glenn is unproven as a head coach. Which is a bit concerning but otherwise there are quite a few things there to be optimistic about. And regardless. This is the place he chose to play. In theory it should be because he believed that it was the best place for him to get paid, start and be successful. Now it's on him. Either he sinks or he swims.
