Three students in my school since yesterday morning have destroyed their Chromebooks by putting lead refills in their charging port causing the computers to start smoking and shut down. Looks like it is a national thing.
A viral trend where students have been purposefully making their Chromebook computers catch fire, and even in some cases explode, is causing one Dauphin County school district to warn parents.
Officials with Central Dauphin School District sent a warning to parents Tuesday about the “#ChromebookChallenge” trend.

Students across the country have reportedly been jamming lead or metal into the Chromebooks’ charging port or stabbing the battery to make the devices catch fire. Videos also show students putting lead refills for a mechanical pencil into a port.
“Please be aware that there is a new TikTok trend, #ChromebookChallenge, going around where students are purposefully shorting out their Chromebooks to cause them to catch on fire by jamming lead or metal into the charging port or stabbing the battery,” a district spokesperson said in a letter to parents.
This can potentially cause the Chromebooks to explode, the district said.
I hope they are suspended and not allowed to return until they pay for replacement computers.
Make them use a pencil and paper to do 100 math problems, english papers, science equations and everything else we had to do without a computer. Kids these days don't even get homework and these brats are going to burn their laptops? Make them carry a backback full of books around all day instead of the computer.
