And British movie magazine Empire has thrown down the gauntlet by releasing its list of the 100 greatest movie characters of all time. Here are their choices for the top 25:

There are a few problems with this list. First, "Fight Club" is a great flick, but number one? Is Tyler Durden really better than Indiana Jones, James Bond, or Charles Foster Kane? Really?

Second, there are numerous characters from the same film series. "Star Wars" gets a whopping six characters -- including Boba Fett, who looked cool but had maybe ten minutes of screen time in the first trilogy. "The Lord of the Rings" gets three slots and "Anchorman" gets two. While these are all fine films, think of how many characters from other great movies didn't make the cut as a result?
Third, the list skews young and male, which makes sense since Empire's readership does as well, but it does make the final product unsatisfying. Only twelve out of the hundred characters are female, only eight characters are from films made before 1970, and only two are from non-English language movies. To put this in prespective, the nation of France -- the country that invented cinema -- has the same number of movie characters on this list as the "Saw" franchise: one.
Fourth, there were a lot of major, iconic characters that were just plain absent. So we've compiled a list of 25 other characters that weren't on the Empire list, but should have been. Of course, by posting this, we know we are also just asking for a fight.

The Dude is, and will always be number one on all lists. Darth Vader probably should be #1 though with Durden as 2 but I'm just glad they gave Durden some love in the first place. Also Captain Jack Sparrow and Neo shouldn't be anywhere near the top 100 even. Yoda should also be quite a bit higher.

Hannibal Lecter (Silence of the Lambs) should be #1. They have him as #5.

Fight Club was Good. But Durden's character wasn't "all time great".

How the hell did Rocky not make this list?

I am with ya Beardown, Rocky should be on the last somewhere.

Absolutely. Rocky being omitted while freaking Neo is on there is a joke. If The Matrix 2 and 3 lived up to the quality of the original, Neo still wasn't that good of a character. Keanu Reeves still can't act his way out of a paper bag and the plotlines and "meaning" were totally fucked in the sequels. Plus that creepy orgy scene was just messed up. Even if you take the original Matrix on its own, Neo is just this Jesus type character. Not really all that interesting. If anything, Morpheus or the bad guy (forget his name) should be on a list before Neo. Either way, this thread has no meaning or substance until Zach arrives with his thoughts.

Yes it's true that anytime a list like this is made, its an invitation for arguments, but this looks like a list that a total amateur like myself would make and get laughed at for. This is not a good list.

Agree with most of the critiques here, and I would ask (not that he should be very high) no love for Jeff Spicoli?

I wouldn't mind seeing Paul Newman's Fast Eddie Felson somewhere in the top 100 as well. I'm probably reaching with this one, but I'd rather see either or both the DeNiro or Grodin characters from Midnight Run rather than Fletch(???) if we're counting 80's comedies. Also wouldn't mind some representation of the Wizard of Oz, though I don't know that one particular character stands out (witch, lion?) Sharon Stone from Casino?

A couple I find missing are "The Man with No Name" (Fistful of dollars, For a Few Dollars More, The Good, The Bad and The Ugly) or Will Muny (Unforgiven) should have been included.

Glaring omission IMO: Buddy Ackerman (Kevin Spacey) from Swimming with Sharks.

Not having Rocky on the list is criminal too.

The thing I like about these lists is that there can be so many different opinions. Obviously it's all subjective.

That list is a joke. I'd throw Ethan Edwards or Tom Doniphon on there or maybe Jose Ferrer's character from The Caine Mutiny for starters.

Dude, where's Doc Holiday? I know the movie wasn't the greatest but Val Kilmer made that a complete badass role in "Tombstone"

The movie was not that bad, just overplayed. I loved it. It was as close to a true telling of the story we have seen for a long time. The most realistic telling was the one with Tom Mix that Wyatt was a consultant on.
The entire male cast was great, the females left something.It was a man movie after all. Kilmer did show what a good actor he could be.
