I beg to differ with some of these.

YAHOO! MOVIE TALKWho Was Overlooked in the '100 Greatest Movie Character' List?by Jonathan Crow    December 2, 2008Any time anyone compiles a "Best of" list they are practically begging for an argument. And British movie magazine Empire has thrown down the gauntlet by releasing its list of the 100 greatest movie characters of all time. Here are their choices for the top 25:
25. Yoda (Empire Strikes Back)
24. Ash (Evil Dead)
23. Harry Callahan (Dirty Harry)
22. Red (The Shawshank Redemption)
21. Michael Corleone (The Godfather series)
20. Forrest Gump (Forrest Gump)
19. Jules Winnfield (Pulp Fiction)
18. Travis Bickle (Taxi Driver)
17. Hans Gruber (Die Hard)
16. Neo (The Matrix trilogy)
15. Ferris Bueller (Ferris Bueller's Day Off)
14. The Terminator (The Terminator series)
13. Gollum (The Lord of the Rings trilogy)
12. John McClane (Die Hard series)
11. James Bond (007 series)
10. Vito Corleone (The Godfather I & II)
9. Ellen Ripley (Alien quadrology)
8. Captain Jack Sparrow (Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy)
7. The Dude (The Big Lebowski)
6. Indiana Jones (Indiana Jones series)
5. Hannibal Lecter (Silence of the Lambs)
4. Han Solo (Star Wars trilogy)
3. The Joker (The Dark Knight)
2. Darth Vader (Star Wars series)
1. Tyler Durden (Fight Club)

See the full list >>

There are a few problems with this list. First, "Fight Club" is a great flick, but number one? Is Tyler Durden really better than Indiana Jones, James Bond, or Charles Foster Kane? Really?

Second, there are numerous characters from the same film series. "Star Wars" gets a whopping six characters -- including Boba Fett, who looked cool but had maybe ten minutes of screen time in the first trilogy. "The Lord of the Rings" gets three slots and "Anchorman" gets two. While these are all fine films, think of how many characters from other great movies didn't make the cut as a result?
Third, the list skews young and male, which makes sense since Empire's readership does as well, but it does make the final product unsatisfying. Only twelve out of the hundred characters are female, only eight characters are from films made before 1970, and only two are from non-English language movies. To put this in prespective, the nation of France -- the country that invented cinema -- has the same number of movie characters on this list as the "Saw" franchise: one.
Fourth, there were a lot of major, iconic characters that were just plain absent. So we've compiled a list of 25 other characters that weren't on the Empire list, but should have been. Of course, by posting this, we know we are also just asking for a fight.
25. Willy Wonka (Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory)
24. Khan (Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan)
23. Tony Manero (Saturday Night Fever)
22. Dr. Evil (Austin Powers series)
21. Mad Max (Mad Max trilogy)
20. Annie Wilkes (Misery)
19. John Rambo (Rambo series)
18. Superman (Superman, Superman II)
17. Popeye Doyle (The French Connection)
16. Michael Dorsey/Dorothy Michaels (Tootsie)
15. Jake La Motta (Raging Bull)
14. Annie Hall (Annie Hall)
13. Will Kane (High Noon)
12. Norma Desmond (Sunset Blvd.)
11. Harry Lime (The Third Man)
10. Gordon Gekko (Wall Street)
9. Yojimbo (Yojimbo, Sanjuro)
8. Tracy Flick (Election)
7. T. E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia)
6. Colonel Kurtz (Apocalypse Now)
5. Shaft (Shaft)
4. Jake Gittes (Chinatown)
3. Holly Golightly (Breakfast at Tiffany's)
2. Mr. Miyagi (The Karate Kid series)
1. The Tramp (Charlie Chaplin's films)

Honorable Mention: Dr. Strangelove (Dr. Strangelove), Howard Beale (Network), Fletch (Fletch), Margo Channing (All About Eve), Max Bialystock (The Producers), Otto (A Fish Called Wanda), Inigo Montoya (The Princess Bride), McLovin (Superbad), Madison (Splash), Navin R. Johnson (The Jerk), Inspector Clouseau (Pink Panther series)

The Dude is, and will always be number one on all lists. Darth Vader probably should be #1 though with Durden as 2 but I'm just glad they gave Durden some love in the first place. Also Captain Jack Sparrow and Neo shouldn't be anywhere near the top 100 even. Yoda should also be quite a bit higher.

Hannibal Lecter (Silence of the Lambs) should be #1. They have him as #5.

Fight Club was Good. But Durden's character wasn't "all time great".

How the hell did Rocky not make this list?

I am with ya Beardown, Rocky should be on the last somewhere.

Lots of problems with this list.

I'm not giving credit to any list that doesn't include the character of one David Wooderson. 8)

Agreed about "The Dude" hell, even Walter would make my top 25.

Absolutely. Rocky being omitted while freaking Neo is on there is a joke. If The Matrix 2 and 3 lived up to the quality of the original, Neo still wasn't that good of a character. Keanu Reeves still can't act his way out of a paper bag and the plotlines and "meaning" were totally fucked in the sequels. Plus that creepy orgy scene was just messed up. Even if you take the original Matrix on its own, Neo is just this Jesus type character. Not really all that interesting. If anything, Morpheus or the bad guy (forget his name) should be on a list before Neo. Either way, this thread has no meaning or substance until Zach arrives with his thoughts.

Yes it's true that anytime a list like this is made, its an invitation for arguments, but this looks like a list that a total amateur like myself would make and get laughed at for. This is not a good list.

Agree with most of the critiques here, and I would ask (not that he should be very high) no love for Jeff Spicoli?

I wouldn't mind seeing Paul Newman's Fast Eddie Felson somewhere in the top 100 as well. I'm probably reaching with this one, but I'd rather see either or both the DeNiro or Grodin characters from Midnight Run rather than Fletch(???) if we're counting 80's comedies. Also wouldn't mind some representation of the Wizard of Oz, though I don't know that one particular character stands out (witch, lion?) Sharon Stone from Casino?

A couple I find missing are "The Man with No Name" (Fistful of dollars, For a Few Dollars More, The Good, The Bad and The Ugly) or Will Muny (Unforgiven) should have been included.

The list was on yahoo.com, but it actually came from Empire magazine. I'm surprised they didn't have James Bond higher on the list.

Glaring omission IMO: Buddy Ackerman (Kevin Spacey) from Swimming with Sharks.

Not having Rocky on the list is criminal too.

The thing I like about these lists is that there can be so many different opinions. Obviously it's all subjective.

That list is a joke. I'd throw Ethan Edwards or Tom Doniphon on there or maybe Jose Ferrer's character from The Caine Mutiny for starters.

They're not even close. Do they realize there were movies before 1970?

That's the good list, right? Much better than the other one. But even though I suggested Spicoli, he's #9? Wow. And how can Darth Vader only be in the 90s? He may not be a deeply-drawn character, but he certainly has more screen presence than many of the ones higher than him... John McClaine is 40 spots higher? Hmm...

i think this is actually a different list...the one eaglo was referring to was from EMPIRE magazine.

see what i mean? jesus christ, this is just...a waste.

there are so many damn good characters, ranking them only brings problems.

Drill Sergeant Hartman is one of my all time favorite characters.

A Steve Buscemi role - maybe mr pink - should be mentioned and the late great paul newman.

I'm a little suprised Hal and Quint are not named and the list has no animated characters.

No list like this can be complete without Randall Patrick MacMurphy.

And nothing from balck and white movies? Humphrey Bogart, Jimmy Stewart anybody? This list is a shame.

Dude, where's Doc Holiday? I know the movie wasn't the greatest but Val Kilmer made that a complete badass role in "Tombstone"

The movie was not that bad, just overplayed. I loved it. It was as close to a true telling of the story we have seen for a long time. The most realistic telling was the one with Tom Mix that Wyatt was a consultant on.
The entire male cast was great, the females left something. It was a man movie after all. Kilmer did show what a good actor he could be.
