Phil Rosenthal just reported:

http://newsblogs.chicagotribune.com/tow ... m-dro.html

Sportscaster Fred Huebner, who's been heard on CBS Radio's WSCR-AM 670 for 16 years, was let go today.

Huebner reported, gave updates and served as sidekick to Mike Murphy and then Mike North over the years on the Score. North left the station this summer after failing to agree to a new contract.

This departure comes on the same day as Steve Dahl's last show on CBS Radio' WJMK-FM 104.

I am sure this makes Chris in Joliet's day.

Wow, they didn't waste any time taking his picture off the site. Not that I really care, but I am surprised they haven't put up the "Caged Bear" picture and profile.

On a sem-related graveyard note; is Monica DeSantis still doing morning traffic or is she elsewhere?

Maybe Fred will set up a sports gambling site. I think that's a good move.

Regardless of what you think of Fred, and I am no fan, the poor guy lost his job today. In this economy it is that much tougher to land. I wish him well. Unlike Dahl, who will continue to be paid for 2.5 years under a fat 7 figure contract, Fred and many others will actually feel their misfortune.

Boy, I do feel sorry for the guy. 16 years at the station, including several years as a part of two morning drive shows. And didn't he just have heart trouble or something?

Well, I'm sure Mike North will take good care of him. Fred can go out for coffee and doughnuts and run other errands for the new Comcast crew.

Wow, that really sucks. Despite the feelings of board members, him and Murph got me started on sports radio. Hopefully he can land on his feet.

Truth be told, Fred & Mike Murphy actually had chemistry when they were on the air together. I think "Murph" & Huebner frequently chatted, even after Fred & George Ofman switched update shifts on "The SCORE". That's too bad what happened to Fred...I know he called a handful of Chicago Fire matches this past spring & summer on MY 50.

She is in the news department at WLS.

Too bad about Fred. I still maintain that he was one of the best update guys.

Well, the Mike North Morning Show has now achieved the coveted "grand slam" by, at least for now, ruining the radio careers of all four of its on-air players: North, Jen, Annie, Fred. Pretty impressive.

You have to assume this was cost related. A Mike Bloomberg isn't making as much as Fred. Fred might have been locked up under his deal with the MNMS which probably paid him more than your typical update guy.

B&B were teasing him last night too regarding his affiliation with Murph on the morning show years ago... I'm sure they don't feel that good about it now knowing he is gone. It is kind of sad, because FH seems like a genuinely nice guy.

Terry for sure. With Steve, Eddie, Jobo, Pappy all gone, Bernsie being the FOTS it's pretty clear Terry doesn't have much time left.

A shame. I was hoping they'd pair him up with Murph. The two of them actually were a decent listen.

Not to knock the guy while he is down, but wasn't he sort of an asshole off the air?

I seem to remember people posting here how he would often yell at producers and was just an overall bitter guy. Someone with an ax to grind against him came here and said how he would wear his Score jacket all over the building and made fun of him for it.

I also recall about 2 years ago, someone here saying they saw Fred and his wife at an Osco pharmacy yelling at someone behind the counter.

That said, not long after his battle with a heart problem, I wish the guy well. He still has more money that me.

Probably, but Im sure he wasnt the only one. Dan and Terry are very open about how they hate dealing with people in public. When Mully was at one of his bowling events out in Algonquin, he was behind me in line at the food counter having a heart attack because the woman wasnt making his hot dog fast enough. That being said, does it make them any better or worse at their on-air jobs?

I was just thinking, it feels like so long ago that they did their score 15th celebration.

I think we all get pissed at people waiting in line for stuff. I know I have. That doesn't make you horrible. It just means you're not very patient.

Yelling at producers? I don't know. Sometimes people deserve to be yelled at. I'll bet Fred never yelled at Jen.

Just guessing a little revenge here for Fred not exactly siding with WSCR when North left.

Sure, he didnt "go with Mike" but then again, Mike didnt offer him any money.

Fred was on the failed DontForgetme.com, Fred was on the Web show. So while he was a WSCR emplyee, he sure kept his ties to North.

Dont think someone didnt notice it freddy boy.

I think it was more of a money thing. I'll bet Fred made 70k or 80k. He was the morning update guy and kind of a co host.

They just had to let his contract bleed out so they let him do updates in the afternoon. You can get a combo of guys to do updates in the afternoon for about 40k or 45k. That money will be split up between a few guys.

It's just a money thing. Fred probably would have taken a pay cut but they had other guys. No need to bother with that.

Poor Fred. :(

It especially sucks today, when unemployment stats, showing half a MILLION jobs lost in November alone, are released. Christmas is 19 days away. I was fired in June, and have only found tempwork since October, and that assignment ends 12/24/08. Being fired SUCKS. I hope he finds something he enjoys soon.

I think Murph on his own is intolerable, but I did remember liking Fred & Murph together.

God bless us everyone, indeed.

No big loss. Fred made about 75k for years, no kids, so he's not hurting. And yes, he was/is a SOB.

He'll probably end up on the monsters of morning show. His sole purpose will be to agree with what North says

Fred added nothing to North's show, but I agree, he had great chemistry with Murph (especially the first time around).

Never a good thing to hear someone losing their job, Fred is a good guy, my concern is where does he go from here? AM1000 isnt hiring, sports phone is dead, not alot of options out there, but hopefully he will end up somewhere.
