This has probably been discussed before, but I'm waiting to head up to Smart Bar and watching the Celtics/Hornets game (Bulls/Grizz would put me to sleep), and it occurs to me that ESPN's live coverage of basketball is even worse than it is for baseball. Hubie Brown keeps repeating the same trite shit about offensive boards and now, in the second half, they keep cutting away to "WIRED" sound from the coaches and the floor. The game is exciting enough as it is, ESPN, please stop.

Oddly enough, while watching parts of that game, I kept thinking that ESPN's broadcast is starting to remind me of the old Jefferson Pilot broadcasts of SEC/ACC football-basketball games of the mid to late 1980's.

Plastic, cheesy and more than a bit off-putting.

espn's best broadcasts are their soccer games. they're pretty exquisite.

This week do they force the joke that is the over the top mis-remembering "Jimmy V" on those broadcasts as well?

They do overdo the Jimmy V stuff, but at least it is for a charitable cause... people in need to benefit from this. I could do without the overdone one Mike is a fat meathead, the other Mike is a prim and proper tea drinker, or the Who's Next? or their panel segments with nine members of which six are former players and two failed English 101.

It's not just ESPN that has made a big deal of their late former colleague, Jim Valvano, and all the constant reminders for you & me to make a donation to the V Foundation. It's my understanding that NBA & NFL officials also support the V Foundation, and have made many donations to Jimmy's charity over the years. Besides all the plugs, ESPN pays its respects to the late analyst & former North Carolina State basketball coach by replaying Jim's speech he made at the 1993 ESPY Awards where he said "Don't give up, don't ever give up..."
