Maybe Jack can now pick up Mancow's morning show and then we can get him from 5:30-11 everyday. Being able to choose between Jonny B and Mancow every morning would be pretty cool. Dahl's show wasn't bad but I guess not many were listening.

turns out north's stupidity helped out the score bigtime. can you imagine north making 800K with the way the economy is right now and the next 12-24 months don't look too good either.

Steve Dahl is 100 percent asshole. I know from personal experience. When I worked at a restaurant located in the Four Season Hotel, Dahl and a friend sat in my section. (They were put there -- away from where most people were seated -- because the stupid manager thought Dahl's appearance (loud shirt, fat) would disturb the other customers.) I made it clear to Dahl that I was a fan by talking about show-related items and telling him the manager's reasons for having him and his friend sit in this odd, empty section. We had fun, or so I thought. I was still watching Dahl as he was leaving and ready to leave a tip. (He didn't know I was in earshot.) I heard his friend say "What about the kid?" Dahl replied "Fuck him."

Fuck Steve Dahl.

Dahl might and more then likely is asshole, but no one holds a candle to Garry Meier. That guy was as complete of a asswipe as you would meet. I mut have ran across the guy 30 times in my lie (I know you are happy for me) and everytime at every even, he would do or say something that just made you want to punch him.

For example, he was a guest a charity event at a place in Bensenville, he bitched about his table, his food, his ride, his place in the order in which to speak, anything and everything was wrong. Now he was also getting paid, the norm was to mail thecheck out after the event, he wanted to be paid same day, so we had the check with us, he refused to get out of the car until we gav him the check, the guy is a asshole.

Curious:

I never used those words. We had a laugh about how he was separated from the rest of the customers and had a brief word about his brief network TV stint. The hotel never allowed any of us to hang onto any of the stars that came in there, so if you saw someone you liked, you had to be discreet about interacting with them.

I won't dispute your story since you've had considerable exposure to him, but the one time I met and talked with Garry he was very friendly and gracious.

too bad dahl didnt' stand up for himself vs Stern. Dahl is right that he created the what we now call Stern type radio. Stern basically copied Dahls material but since Stern was in NY, he got all the pub. When Dahl did say that in the 90s, Stern just ripped him to shreads. Stern was at his height at that time and there's really nothing Steveo could do.

stern did not copy at all what dahl did, dude was in D.C. in the early 80's when he started getting famous for his "style". and WNBC hated what stern was about, they wanted to control him.

I think that Howard is the greatest comedian of all time. With that being said, he clearly was influenced by Dahl. The audio backs it up as well. Howard was in DC still doing the wacky type morning zoo, doing voices and bringing in the occasional stripper and by that point Dahl had moved on to the freewheeling, just talk to the audience like you would your buddies type show. I’m 25 so I don’t remember Dahls glory years and I always found him to be kinda boring, in fact I grew to really hate the guy. But it was on Christmas or some other holiday a couple years ago that CKG played a bunch of old tapes from Dahl and they were really brilliant. One story in general was him being on some ship and getting really drunk and cussing people out and hitting on chicks, all the while was wife was their and totally embarrassed. I’m probably not doing the bit justice but after he got sober Steve really lost his edge.

Pretty interesting thread on SFN I saw after Steve got canned. The excerpts are from an unauthorized bio on Howard. I read it, it’s not a hatchet job and you can tell the author was a fan, but the parts about Steve are pretty interesting. You would think Howard could simply admit to being influenced by Steve but after 20 plus years of claiming you invented everything in radio, it will probably never happen.
