For being an internet sports board, some people seem to take this place way too fucking seriously.

I hear about how bad the board has gotten every so often too. Then, somebody who feels that way starts a thread like this, and its 8, 9, 10 pages of the shit they complain about reading on here. Pretty counterproductive if you ask me.

Part of what WR is complaining about (the perceived decline) may well be due to a recent board addition and his over-exhuberance. Hopefully that will calm down. But another factor may just be the time of year. Now that Minnesota has lost, the Bears game tomorrow night becomes really interesting, with the Bears facing Houston and the Vikings having to face the Giants next week. Things could come together for the Bears and provide some excitement here. But since the Baseball season ended with a decided thud, there has not been a lot of things happening that have caused many pulses to quicken. However, with the Hawks on a great run and the situation ( already mentioned) going on with the Bears-I see things very possibly getting quite lively and interesting here. I agree that things got a little stale for a while. But I think it was just a reflection of circumstances.

The board has been in freefall for 2+ years or so I've read.

I actually think the board has been great the past 6 months or so with some very articulate and entertaining new posters. If every thread broke down into, "I think that's erroneous and your assumptions are predicated on the baseless nature of...", this place would be boring as hell. The board was created to discuss entertainment and has become entertainment with some serious discussions as well. There's something here for everybody.

I made the observation to Irish Boy after an Illini football game in the Fall of '07 that I thought the board had gone crazy with one-liners. This isn't recent. But the people doing it now are probably better. But, if CLH is going to post a "Make Me Like Football" thread on a Saturday night when half the board is drinking and/or drunk, then I would expect the one liners to fly. I thought his retort was probably the funniest thing I read the whole night.

I also don't know about the "troll problem" either. Most of the trolls that I have seen are specific characters tailored to an issue like Jack Brickhouse (and I'm hardly any of them - I have one active troll going about 1 post a week). It's like a drop on a radio show - you expect it and it's usually funny. When I came on board there was Poofer and Pickles and This Old Gay Cub and Mac Sucks.

I think the biggest difference is there are just way more threads. I used to be able to read everything and catch up in one sitting. Now, I usually just pick 5 or 10 threads a day to follow unless I'm really bored. I think we'll see a whole new bottle of vitriol for the board once North starts his TV show.

Completely agree Dr.

It seems like a majority of the people here took my comment and then made everything black and white with what I said. I mentioned I do enjoy laughing at the one-liners form time to time.

I'll agree that the number of threads going at one time are pretty ridiculous. Personally, as I am sure most of you could guess, I just pretty much stay in the General Discussion, Shout-Outs, and Douchbag sections each day and then maybe dabble in another sports-related thread. Going anywhere else at this point would take half a day to catch up on another conversation.

Personally, when I joined the board a couple years ago I was pretty much a couple-posts-a-week guy and enjoyed reading the posts of the regulars at that time more than writing anything myself. Guys like WR, good dolphin, A7X, and Al Barlick were my favorites at the time. Tall Midget just scares the shit out of me.

Thread Summary (I wish someone would have done this for me...)

Older posters don't like all the 'one liners' being thrown about and long for the good old days when people posted with hate and vitriol. Nothing beats a long, heated debate that ends with both parties still not agreeing on anything.

Newer posters take exception to the constant 'good old days' discussions. Some believe that posters like Ryan and Nas come off as somewhat arrogant. The newer posters come here for laughs and don't like all the arguing....except in this thread.

this board is great. What it was like before I joined, I don't know (I'll bet it was better and I've brought it down). Want an argument? You know who to start it with. Want a boring discussion? Ditto. Want a funny thread? Rather easy. Want to organize a board get-together for flimsy reasons? Rather easy. The board is like a good golden retriever...always there when you need to relax and talk about sports (the board, not the dog), and when you don't need that, it amuses and runs itself (usually by shredding newspaper or chasing a fly in the living room) (not the board, the dog). I can't think of a better way to spend my time than to be commenting on whatever insanity has come up today (other than getting a life). Board threats will come and go (after all, I probably was one before I figured out what not to do) but as long as a few of the cornerstones remain (I'm not naming names) we'll get along just fine. Viva la board. Oh, and T-Bone IS The Cooler. End of discussion.
