you opened my eyes, R&B mainly because i know you're a HS fan, i would have never thought he would have known what a Steve Dahl was. I know Dahl was awesome when he was younger, late 70's, into the 80's.

and here's the thing about Stern that makes him, in my mind, the greatest radio broadcaster of all time...he knows that his time as "Howard Stern" has passed, and instead of trying to hold onto those years when he was younger and more passionate and think of himself STILL as some kind of hero...he has allowed everyone surrounding him to take over the show. that is a testament to how great he is. he knows he's past his prime. but he knows he's got guys on his show who are just ENTERING their prime, and gives them the spotlight. the howard stern show is more like...the richard christy & sal show, and it's just as funny because howard takes the back seat. he knows he's not relevant as HIMSELF anymore, and he knows that guys like artie, and sal, and calls from eric the midget make the show. that's a great thing.

i still maintain the howard stern show is the best thing on the air, regardless of how you get to listen to it.

Got to agree about Stern. Since he's gone on satellite, he's layed low, and he should lay low. From what I hear, inside radio guys say when Stern is not on the air, he's the nicest guy you'd ever work with.

The comments about HS here have been interesting, and I'd like to add one: A previous post said that it's not really his show but more like the Rich and Sal show. I disagree, as the HS show has always been ensemble-like in nature. With more freedom and time, HS has brought in more "outside" voices to add to what already exists, not as some type of surrender.

I've heard Stern talk about Dahl a number of times and while he doesn't say he influenced him, he does speak about him with a lot more respect than I hear Stern talk about other guys like that which leads me to believe he holds Dahl in some esteem and probably was influenced. Dahl was doing some of this stuff first.

I think it was the Richard and Sal show for a little while but not lately. Stern talked about how critical people were of too much of those guys and I think he throttled them back.

Howard and Artie are still the best thing on that show today.

For those with XM Sirius, they started The History of Howard Stern Part 2 today. I listened to Part 1 last year and I highly recommend it. I think it's pretty interesting and well done, especially for someone like me that has only really listened in the past 5-10 years or so.

Listening to these old 1980s clips of Stern is interesting but having listened to Dahl during that same time, Dahl's show was better.

Stern is trying to be outrageous but it sounds more forced than I remember Dahl sounding. Also, everytime Stern says something there is this sycophantic clapping in the background that is annoying as hell.

Anyone who doesn't think that Stern was influenced by Dahl must answer the question of how Howard Stern ever found an obscure gay movie theatre on Chicago's near north side named the Bijou and determined that they had very funny cumming attractions on their voice mail.

I understand that people sometimes have the same ideas. This would be a stretch.

Take a look at Stern's homo club bits as well. He has the same content and almost the same sound effects as Dahl had (and Dahl's predates Stern).

A little less obvious are Dahl's Anthony voice and Stern's voice for old guy in the original Survivor and his black helicopter reporter voice.

I love Stern's work but the guy was more than just influenced by Dahl.

Well, Stern was definitely influenced to take part of Steve in the early days, but as he went on, he evolved into having his own style. Having other people contributing helped him and his show stay interesting.

Haven't heard the show in about 2 years and I know people say Howard is phoning it in and maybe he is, but I thought the show was great today. Artie is back and high regardless of what he says, the random drug tests should be fun. The Rehab parody was awesome and as bad as it sounds, I'll probably laugh when Artie dies, he's a wreck and i love em for it.

Howard, in my opinion, is sounding -- dare I say it? -- better than ever. Remember, he doesn't have the FCC fucking with him, so that edge may be gone only because it's not really needed. Also, you know what's funny about Artie? He may live longer than everyone else on the show. This reminds me of the Dodgers' infield from the championship days: Cey, Russell, Lopes and Garvey. The shortstop -- whose name I just blanked out on; it is Russell right? -- was the last Dodger left after everyone else, who was much more popular, had left.

i've heard his shows are awesome too; i think he was in chicago, or milwaukee recently; a friend of mine and i tried to go but it had sold out...definitely want to check him out next time he comes here, he doesn't have long to live...
