doesn't mean you have no presence."

Right section, wrong section, I really don't give a fuck because its Zeppelin tommorow on the afternoon saloon. James Patrick Page, the second greatest guitarist of all time (2nd to Jimi Hendrix) turns 65 Friday. And while I hope I get to see him play live one more time before he leaves this life, I've been enjoying a lot of the new "bootlegs" that have surfaced on youtube. Most of them are just an MP3 with one picture, so its really not a video, but these shows from 1973 and '75 give you just a little toke of what Led-Zeppelin was like at thier peak, and when Page's playing was at his prime. On the contrary, there is some stuff out there from 1977 when his playing what not so good, and if you want to see how frail and pathetic looking a decade of hard drinking and herion use can make a man appear, search for "1984 Arms Concert" and check the "Stairway to Heaven" performance. I'll share a couple of my favorite Page solos here, and encourage you Zepheads out there to do the same. Happy Birthday, Pagey. Please enjoy this thread with your speakers turned up to 11.

Covering John Lee Hooker during "Whole Lotta Love" NY 1973. Excuse the crotch shots at the begining and be prepared to have your face sufficiently melted.

Earl's Court 1975. 2:30-5:30 is a great funky jam, nice solo and an impressive bassline as well.

Acoustic Page never fails. Quite the soulful one on the hollowbody, Also Earl's Court 1975

"Achillies Last Stand" Knebworth, 1979. 2 shows to a combined audience of over 200,000. Blistering.

A slightly re-arranged version of "Babe I"m Gonna Leave You" from 1998, with a killer guitar solo. The rain adds a nice touch.

So the world is spinnin' faster,
Are you dizzy when you're stoned?
Let the music be your master,
Will you heed the master's call?

Cheers to all Page/Zepheads. Happy birthday Pagey, most versatile, most soulful, rockin'est guitarist ever to pick up an axe.

I got the nickname because the carpet matched...nevermind how I got the name. At least a girl gave it to me...

Wow....not even close.

Great songwriter, great producer, but as a lead guitarist?

Try again. Great but not even in the team photo.

This could be the first opinion I've ever read that is 100% wrong.

Made up my mind to break you this time,
Won't be so fine, it's my turn to cry.
Do want you want, I won't take the brunt.
It's fadin' away, can't feel you anymore.
Don't care what you say 'cause I'm goin' away to stay,
Gonna make you pay for that great big hole in my heart.
People talkin' all around,
Watch out woman, no longer
Is the joke gonna be on my heart.
You been bad to me woman,
But it's coming back home to you.

Next time you have a bad relationship situation...read this and move on

I'd agree with this. Awesome arranger too. A legend, no doubt, though...

I missed this the first time I read it. I have to agree with wdelaney. There a few guys I would put above him from strictly a guitar standpoint.

I can't view vids at work, but I'll assume by that link its solos played at blinding speeds. Fast does not necessarily equal good. Devin Hester is fast as wind, but is he one of the best WRs ever? Hardly.

He's my favorite and I'm totally biased. But I think there's a lot to be said about how many styles you can play and play well, and the emotion and feeling that is put into what you play. Page is second to none in both categories.

How do people like Clampton and Knopfler rank in your world?

Knopfler is a fine example of the list of many guitarists better than page...

Big difference between "your favorite" and "2nd greatest all time"

You opened this can of worms... I take nothing away from the greatness of Led Zeppelin - the band or Jimmy Page's songwriting and production abilities. As far as what you mentioned, guitar greats, there are PLENTY in front of him... too many to mention.

And for the record, I do agree that Hendrix tops that list.

Cobain?

Well, so much for that list having any credibility... they probably have a "bassist" list with Sid Vicious at #1 and D'arcy at #2.
