Are you kidding? Posting here had nothing to do with it. We have a reach of 500 people tops. You think a big company like ESPN is gonna sweat that?

Comments about M&M winning the ratings battle in the Sun-Times would have been more of a factor. I don't think it was that either. It was just cutting costs. That's all.

I don't think ad money is there even for highly rated radio shows. Salarys have to go down for hosts to meet that. Everything will be scaled down in radio.

If Mac does get hired at the Score it won't be for what he was making at ESPN 1000. I'll bet 350k or 400k will be the going rate if they want him.

How about this? Move Bernsie to mornings with Mully and put Mac back with Boers in the afternoon.

I'm disappointed as MJH was my intro to Sports talk. I can recall leaving work at 4.30pm back in 2001 and having a bad day I needed some levity. I stumble onto am1000 as I "scan" stations and stopped as I heard Mac and Jurko laughing uncontrollably. I was hooked.

In addition I loved Friday's show; The interview with Angelo, Jurko v Harry, Finfer from the Cubs convention (he was good) and Jurko's do it yourself was a great bundle of radio goodness.

I feel like my wife just cheated on me. I want to stay with the afternoon saloon but I can't.

I agree with whoever it was that said that ESPN1000 is moving to all national programming.

ESPN just wants to put the shows they are already producing on the air. Why pay to produce more (local) shows, when they've already paid for a show that they could air instead.

I couldn't believe this story when I saw it in the Sun-Times. I'm just hoping Danny Mac didn't burn too many bridges at the Score for their to be an opportunity to return in some capacity there. There just aren't many options in town for sports talker, like McNeil.

I can't say I'll be turning on ESPN 1000 very often any longer. He was the only reason I turned it on to begin with.

Management is totally different at the Score from when Mac was last there.

Hell, Mitch Rosen is there. He hired him at ESPN 1000.

Bad move by ESPN, Mac will be back but no longer bragging about being the highest paid sports host in town, because he wont be. ESPN will syndicate all day, Score gets Mac, trounces MVP in the ratings, make mad money and ESPN wont give two shits cause they'll still have spots playing and they'll be paying no one to work so they'll make a profit. Radio execs are good at one thing only and that's killing off local talent.

Bad economy, new rating system, high salaries = cheap talent

Stever Dahl, Pappy, & Mac were all released because high price talent has no value in the new Arbitron rating system. These whales were soaking up an inordinate amount of their station's resources and they were not getting the bang for their buck. Dahl was released with 2 yrs left on his contract! Bernsie beware...please don't make the same power play Pappy made or you will be out on the street.

The future of radio is middle of the road talent (crap) like Carm, Holmes, Sylvie, Hood, etc or mail it in name guys like Hamp or Wobble who want people to remember them in this town so they can still eat 4 free.

Terrible news but I'm confident Mac will land back at the Score now. He'll do mornings with Terry or Matt (maybe both) while Bernstein is given a new partner in Goff in drive time. Mac will take a lower salary with ratings based incentives and kick the living hell out of ESPN in morning drive. It will be just like when he came back and started MJH with a vengance. He'll do the same thing here and sink Pastor and his little station with everything he has. I think he'll realize that taking a lower base with incentives is a great idea considering how easily 670 will be able to thrash ESPN now and he could hopefully end up making the same if his show performs. Mitch will bring him back and we'll finally have a woken up and dusted off Boers along with a fresh Bernstein and Goff show that will still smoke ESPN's new "Saloon" afternoon show. Book it.

Wow, this is spot on. First, Mac was dead come May anyway. This board had nothing to do with anything. His column in the Sun-Times slamming M&M made it happen yesterday and not in a few months. Your choices for lineups at the Score make a lot of sense as well. You nailed it.

What you have to ask yourself is, what kind of ratings can they get WITHOUT Mac, and what is their ad rates set to, accordingly. If the difference isn't as great as you'd think, then it makes economic sense. And somewhere, after one too many suspensions, they might have figured out where that cutoff point is.

There's another one for the afternoon show in general, and another for the mid-morning show. I don't know what Waddle and Silvy take in, but by the virtue of having one less host, it should be better for them.

Sadly, neither Harry nor Jurko can drive a show. They need a third hand, be that Hood, JD or Carm.

I wonder how many other Sports Talk stations CBS owns, and why they haven't started consolidating broadcast talent.

Hey aparicio, since you're so 'spot on and all knowing' on most subjects, please provide the statement where Mac 'slammed' Mike and Mike - I'd like to see it. I think he slammed all the local shows that can't have higher ratings than a nationally syndicated show. He complimented Mike and Mike on their 'fine show' if I'm not mistaken.

Wow. You really over value the importance of this message board don't you. You really think after just being told he's off the air, Mac's thoughts race to "Man I better get over to CSFMB to make sure the pantsless internet cretins know exactly what went down"

Mac I hope you land on your feet (preferably back at WSCR) in the near future, and all the best to you and Sheri and the kids while this mess sorts itself out.

I'm going to Disney in a couple of weeks. As a sign of my disagreement with this move, Mickey will be getting an upper decker on my way out.

Too bad, this was a shock. Some good will come of this, though. Mac will be fine.
I am sure there are some nervous hosts on the SCORE, however. This is not a good time to be negotiating a contract. Hopefully WMPV's loss will be WSCR's gain and radio will be better for it.

Mac has some free time to get his house in order. So he's got that going for him...which is nice.

When you use another forum you're getting paid to appear in and you tell your main employer, directly or indirectly, that their signature morning-drive product has no business beating the competition in Chicago and is a better fit in Oklahoma or Oregon, there MAY be consequences to pay. I'm not saying who's right or who's wrong, that's just the way it is sometimes. You want to be the bad boy, the rebel, and "tell it like it is," wonderful. You want to draw a $600, 700, 800K paycheck, whatever the hell it is, from a major communications outlet with a reputation to protect and a lot of money at stake, then maybe not so good. You have issues with Mike & Mike in the morning, then maybe go to work at the Herald for Ted Cox's salary, not for ESPN. Can't have it all sometimes in this world, boys.

I'm not that surprised by ESPN 1000's decision. I thought Mac should be careful. He was being too outspoken. ESPN is owned by Disney, which is an extremely conservative company. In this lousy economy, Media outlets are looking to weed out high salaries & controversial personalties (I.E. Mariotti & North). Mac had become increasingly Surly and Pompous in the past few years. I thought after he quit smoking it got even worse. I could tell he was rubbing management the wrong way. I loved the show but I could tell there was underlying tension on MJH. I will miss his candor, but not his stubborn, hard-headed, and at times, boorish attitude. He will be back in the Media in 6 months. North & Mariotti have resurfaced.

MJH was the first sports show I ever listened to and for the last five years or so it's what keeps me sane in the afternoon. I'm not too shocked by the move just the timing of it. It's the nature of the beast and I think Mac knows that. He's a talented guy and like cream, he will rise to the top. Life is all about overcoming obstacles seen and unseen. Mac will be fine, I'm worried moreso about the show itself. I like Carm, Hoodie and most of the hosts, but none of them are Mac. This is like TLC losing Left Eye, they couldn't go on. MJH was so unique that if you take away any 1/3 of it, it's like taking away all three parts. They all balance one another, take one away, you now have an unbalanced show. It's why the show was never good if one of them was on vaction and I was happy when they generally all took time off together. So the show we all love called MJH is no more. But in life you lose things you love. I'll call-in and listen on Monday because I know this will be the topic of conversation. I'll pay my respects to Jurko and Harry and will probably find other things to do now on weekday afternoons. As much as I enjoy and respect Mac, I'm more concerned with the 30,000 Circuit City workers who've lost their jobs. Mac has a little bit to fall back on and great prospects for the future, I don't think the same can be said for the majority of those CC employees. Well wishes to all.

jason from Chatham

What he said...damn, I'm going to miss Mac. See you on the Score, Mackeyfish.

The fuck??? I leave the board for a mere 24 hours and all hell breaks loose. This is truly a sad day. I officially despise the radio industy and all that it constitutes. Good luck with that new direction Jim Pastor, you motherless fuck! I have to go and hang black bunting on my radio now

Didn't WNEW in NY pay those Opie and Anthony guys for the remaining 3 years of their contract just to keep them off a competing free air broadcast station?

Damn, they even did XM during that time and got double paychecks til their WNEM contracts ended in 2007 and they returned to another broadcast radio station:

When Mac was surprised to learn around 5:25p yesterday that Carmen DeFalco & Jeff Dickerson were going to host "The Show" last night and criticized management's plans to air national sports talk from the folks in Bristol, CT after dark on non-Bulls gamenights, something tells me that was the last straw and that the decision was made to pull the plug after the "Neighborhood Corner Tavern" had closed for the weekend. It's just speculation on my part, but I don't think Mac was supposed to mention that part about programming through the end of March...

My first thought was he pissed off Jerry Angelo with that interview and Angelo told the suits he wouldn't be on the station anymore. Just my initial gut reaction.
