Why McNeil got the boot

Posted by Ed Sherman at 1/19/2009 6:57 AM CST on Chicago Business

Local sports talk radio fans spent the weekend wondering why WMVP-AM 1000 would decide to part ways with its most valuable personality, Dan McNeil.

Mr. McNeil was the driver of the afternoon show, teaming with John Jurkovic and Harry Teinowitz to consistently generate some of the best ratings for sports talk in Chicago. Yet Friday, WMVP told Mr. McNeil that his services were no longer needed, declining an option to pick up the final year of his contract.

Full disclosure: I am writing a book with Dan McNeil on Chicago sports.

Now, Mr. McNeil hardly was the model ESPN employee. He had a couple of suspensions, and he didn't drink the company Kool-Aid. He wasn't shy about taking shots at the empire. Those factors did play a role in the final decision.

However, there was another reason: Money.

WMVP GM Jim Pastor wouldn't comment beyond a statement. It included a line, "Given the economic climate, we feel this is the right thing to do." That says a bunch.

Mr. McNeil was the highest-paid local sports talker in town, earning a reported $600,000. That salary made him vulnerable during a period in which ad revenues are declining. There isn't much of an opportunity to fully capitalize on a high-paid host these days. The strategy is to play defense to keep the bleeding in check.

WSCR went through somewhat the same exercise with Mike North last summer. The station wanted to cut his salary in half to the $800,000. Mr. North walked.

WSCR then replaced him in the mornings with Mike Mulligan and Brian Hanley, who combined probably make about half of what Mr. North turned down. WSCR's bottom line feels much better, thank you.

The fact that Mr. McNeil was high maintenance surely made the decision easier for WMVP. But there is considerable risk involved.

For now, Mr. McNeil will be replaced by Carmen DeFalco, who earns considerably less. I'm high on Mr. DeFalco, but he faces a difficult task. He doesn't have the edginess of Mr. McNeil. The afternoon show has a loyal following, and listeners will be mad that Mr. McNeil is gone.

MVP reduced its expenses by shedding Mr. McNeil's salary, but it also figures to lose ratings and, subsequently, ad revenues. And at some point, it probably will have to reinvent an afternoon show, no small task. I wouldn't be surprised if Tom Waddle, who is toiling in the 9 a.m.-noon shift, eventually assumes a larger role in afternoon drive.

As for Mr. McNeil, look for him to land at his old stomping grounds, WSCR-AM 670, shortly after his non-compete runs out in May. He could be reunited over there with Mr. Jurkovic, whose contract runs out this summer.

Exactly where Mr. McNeil fits in with WSCR remains to be seen, but with his drawing power, the station will find a spot for him.

In the short term, WSCR executives also are thrilled. The station doesn't have to compete with Mr. McNeil anymore.

I like Harry. I really do. Nice as hell guy. But, I think a Mac and Jurko show would be just great. I really doubt you're going to see Jurko in the mornings though. If that scenario were to play out, I would be very hard pressed to dial in 1000. I like Silvy and Waddle but one show doesn't put you on P1.

does Ed know this from his personal relationship or is it just him wearing a media coat and speculating?

There is not a chance in hell that Mac ever works with The Tiny One again in his career. I'm to the point where I think he'd be better off losing Jurko as well.

I agree with gd. I like the MJH show but I never got the impression that Mac was truly happy with having Harry as a contributor to the show.

It seemed he came to grips that the show was successful and set it aside. But, it never seemed that comfortable. I don't think he would go back to it voluntarily in a new venture.

Couldn't agree more with gd and Dr. K. I wonder if Harry is shaking in his boots now? Although I'm sure his salary is considerably less than Mac's was, as the wobbly third wheel on the MJH tricycle, I think his lack of sports acumen and sophomoric shtick will stand out even more without Mac there to keep it in check.

Mac doesn't need either of those two. Here's a plan from hell for Mitch to consider.

Sign Mac for HFC 2008 featuring Drinky as a traffic cop.

Move Danny to the mornings with Hanley for the Two Irreverent Blowhards show. How does four hours of NBA talk sound? I would love it.

Give Murph a partner in Mulligan and expand the show to four hours.

Pair Hampton and Buffone for the Neanderthal and Danimal show. Maybe then Butkus interviews will become interesting.

I know I'm in the minority. But, I really hope that the end result of this whole thing is not a reunion of the Heavy Fuel Crew.

That would really be disappointing to me.

Ironic that you would ask me that since I think I've posted it before and you seem to have an encyclopedic knowledge of what has been posted here. :)

I never liked HFC and, by extension, Terry or Mac. I thought they too often broke into everything was "gay", "weird", etc. It wasn't until Mac left that I realized it was just Terry that I didn't like. I found Mac a much more personable and engaging character away from Terry. Maybe that is because Mac just changed, personally, after the break-up. I don't know. But, as much as Mac likes Terry, I don't think he brings out the best aspects of Mac in terms of creating the most entertaining show.

Again, I know I'm in the minority on this but it's my opinion. I wouldn't listen to Mac as much if repaired with Terry. I'm sure Mac will be shattered by this news.

If your only purpose it to wait for the beating, I would not miss the first five minutes of the first show.

all they'd find was a bloody moustache...or gotee...and a faint voice saying "McPhail, F-A-I-L"...

GD,
I agree. I personally feel the MJH show was done. I'd prefer Dan start fresh with a new show and a new partner. Note the word 'partner' and not 'partners'. Can we please say farewell to the 3-man show? Please?

I hate 3-man shows, too many voices. That's why MNF dropped the 3-man booth as did WBBM Bears radio.

As long as Dr. Joyce Brothers is on the panel, any size is OK by me.

I felt like I was reading the script for Reservoir Dogs with all of those Mr. McNeils and Mr. Defalcos in there....

Mac will be fine. ...and I'd prefer he doesn't reunite with 'Mr. Boers' also. That ship has sailed, and Terry has gotten progressively more bitter and disconnected from sports as the years move along.

He has openly stated that he would not watch sports if it were not for his job (and he often does not watch it even for his job). It floored both Jason and Drinky at the time. I would think it would be unaccpetable for a guy like Mac to accept from a partner.

I guess I am a bit nostalgic when I look for a Mac and Terry reunion. But I am the same guy that will watch reunion tv shows - Charlie's Angels, Brady Bunch, Three's Company (moment of silence for John - thank you) and pretty much any other crappy sitcom that appeared in the 70's or 80's.

But the more I think about it, the more I guess I am becoming concerned.

The great thing about a good movie for me is the originality of it - the freshness of ideas, the interesting plot scenarios, etc. The problem with sequels is that they lose some of that edginess and originality that brought people in in the first place.

I am beginning to wonder if that wouldn't be the case with Mac and Terry - I hope I am over-analyzing.

The nostalgic part of me will continue to hope that this reunion takes place and I will a P1 first day. The pessimistic part of me recalls the plethora of sequels that have fallen straight on their keester.
