pizza_Place: I'm a Gelsosomo's guy.
As a new poster to the board, I realize that I haven’t earned my “stripes” yet so to speak, but a couple of observations that I have made since the ill-fated removal of Mac from the MJH show:
1) It is abundantly clear to me now, as I assumed at any point during one of Mac’s many “vacations” that Harry and Jurko’s personalities and charm were completely symbiotic to Mac. Jurko clearly isn’t Jurko without Mac’s prodding and jesting and Harry unfortunately is too much Harry without Mac’s ability to refocus him and reel him in.
2) Carmen Defalco, while seemingly a genuinely nice guy, isn’t the answer. Personally, I don’t care what the answer is because I moved ESPN 1000 from P1 to P3 the day I heard of Mac’s dismissal, but this doesn’t solve my afternoon listening desires either. I am not a big fan of music in my car and while I love Terry I hate the combination of him and Bernstein together. In the 20 or 25 minutes total I have been able to listen to the “Afternoon Saloon”, (original) I have come away feeling melancholy and spiteful. I know that Carmen didn’t ask for the gig but I can’t help but feeling some resentment that it is no longer Mac I’m hearing through my airwaves keeping my drive home entertaining and thought provoking.
3) Echoing the numerous posts of a Heavy Fuel Crew Reunion, all I can say is sign me up. Maybe just maybe you can go home again, despite the cliché. Radio chemistry is so hard to find. You can’t fake it – the listeners know when the “act” is contrived or forced. That chemistry has existed for me a couple of times in my life – Johnny B and Buzz, Kevin Matthews and Wayne Messmer, Dan and Terry and MJH. My afternoons suck now. I am hoping against hope that a reunion is in the making.
4) Like him, love him or hate him, I find it completely sophomoric and vitriolic to be happy that Mac (or anyone) lost his gig. Maybe I am showing my man crush of Mac too much, but I tend to be a little more sensitive to Danny’s plight being a fellow Hoosier and a father myself. I don’t pretend to know how well Mac has planned for this day or how much he was able to put away during the gravy years, but in this day and age with companies going belly up by the boatload, I wonder if some of you who are cheering Dan’s temporary demise would be so caustic if the shoe was on the other foot? Yes, Dan’s comments about not getting out of bed for less than three fitty might have been a thorn in the side to all of us who make south of 150 K a year, but as most people, we tend to live to our means. I hope for Danny’s sake and for anyone else’s sake that has lost their job in this economy that they planned ahead. I have a feeling Danny knew the end was near as his comments have suggested, but I hope that lead to some saving for a rainy day.
That’s my two cents guys. Take it or leave it. I will try to be a semi-regular contributor and waiting for Danny to land on his feet sometime soon.

I can hardly wait to invoke the anger and poison pen (keyboard?) of good dolphin and stu gotz. I have to admit I do enjoy their postings though - hell, it's the only afternoon entertainment I have now.

Over or under of two weeks before Afternoon Saloon breaks out Critics at Extra Large and Harry's B Stories?

Thanks Dolphin. I feel accepted now.

My only fear of posting was having Danny critique my grammar, punctuation and sentence structure. Shit, I see a run on sentence - be right back...

as a hoosier, you would know that unless you have a drug habit or enjoy eating dodo egg omeletes, a person could not spend Dan's reported yearly income in a lifetime

Club - yeah I am anal like that. Probably my upbringing in da Region. Don't want to come off like a hillbilly or anything. ha.

Dolphin - we have all seen those stories about people winning the lottery and being broke in less than a year. How many million dollar athletes are out there hawking their championship rings or selling their autographs because of overspending, poor investments, etc. I'm not saying Danny is one of those guys, but hey, you never know.

Very well spoken and he waxes poetic in his thoughts. I dig the cut of this guys jib and shockingly I agree with every point accept the reunion with Terry . Been there done that and I think Mac is looking to move forward and build something new and he can't with Boers.

If Jurko does come over and everything is pointing in that direction and they get a 3 rd guy then yes, I think Mac can reinvent the wheel for a 3rd time.

I do agree Carm is in a tough spot and they will blow this thing up by Opening day or sooner as just in seeing how this board has reacted and people I chat with who used to listen have either switched to B&B or have I-pods in .

Mac has a huge following and just sitting in the brew pub with him after the Hawks game last week, people came up and told him the reason they listened was because of him and they won't now because of his departure .

The thing of it is, I just don't see Jurko escaping and coming over. The guy has a hard time keeping focused during a show, and needs prodding.

I recall Jurko's trips on Heavy Fuel Crew, and they were hilarious. Problem is, keeping some approximation of that energy level, day in, day out.

I may be wrong, but I expect he'll remain at ESPN. Hell, what else do they have to keep an afternoon listenership? Grab Hood & eject Harry? Coulda done that years ago, and didn't. I'm sure Mac would not have complained, at the time...

Maybe one day. Someone in Sports radio will implement the man on the scene. For such an event oriented theme, not one has tried it. Jimmy Bud Weiser, Turd, like them or not, they had success! I am pretty sure Bleacher babe or bum was decent.

I think Jurco could be the man!
