I'm sold. Looks like a better 'Rocky Balboa'.

He's being mentioned for an Oscar nomination. I was the guy who paid to see Johnny Handsome in theaters. "SHOOT THAT FUCKIN' GEEK!!!" - Ellen Barkin's finest line.

I was a huge fan of Mickey Rourke and I thought he'd resurface in a major way after his work in SIN CITY. I was mistaken.

I wish him luck - it appears many of his brain cells have passed away. This role seems tailor made for him.

Glad to see some of the action scenes were shot at the bingo hall in south Philly.

Two words for this movie: Ernest The Cat!(he's the nemesis in this movie)

The early pub is AWESOME, and the nude photos of Academy Award winning actress Marisa Tomei are equally fine. Nice pierced nips.

Is Tomei one of the few Academy Award winners that goes on to do MORE nude scenes after she wins an Oscar?

www.wwtdd.com search function - Marisa Tomei - gotta love it.

Her body is impressive for a 44 year old. It's not like she's got big cans but the she is in some amazing shape.

I saw Rourke do an interview a few days ago and the guy looked like Don Quixote.

When does this movie come out?

Well I saw this flick today and I loved it. Rourke didn't play a badass in the way he's done in the past but his character Randy "The Ram" Robinson is a badass without really trying to be. One of his more believable role imo and most likely playing himself. Marissa Tomei is fuckin SMOKING! Good lord

This sounds like the scenes of "Beyond the Mat" that involved Jake "The Snake" Roberts.

Awesome documentary! Yep, it certainly sounds like some of this movie is lifted from that flick. Then again, with all these rasslers dying, the Chris Benoit 'situation', etc. etc. - nothing surprises me out of the rassling world anymore. Nor will any MMA news stories similar to this.

"The Wrestler", in some ways, reminded me of "Raging Bull". The opening sequence shows the glory days of Randy "The Ram" Robinson, and then the film opens up with the usual "20 Years Later", and he's a broken down man who works at a food mart and still does weekend shows for some extra scratch, just trying to make ends meet, and recapture old glory.

There is nothing we haven't seen here before with the dark side of an athlete's life--although I did enjoy some of the credit given to these guys who are trying to make a living, and aren't the big celebrities like "The Rock" or Stone Cold Steve Austin. They have pretty lame names, and they do actually beat the hell out of each other at times. There's a pretty bloody and gritty match that "The Ram" gets involved with, which leads to his ultimate "life-changing" decision to retire, and that's when he suffers a heart attack.

At first he doesn't want to retire, but after trying to reconnect with his daughter thanks to the advice of his regular stripper-friend (played quite well by Marissa Tomei--I didn't know she could work a pole like that!), he decides to settle down a bit. But as it turns out, his daughter hates him and the one chance he has to redeem himself by taking her out to dinner, he blows it on cheap sex with a slut with a Fireman fetish (probably the funniest sequence in the whole film).

And of course, that's what this movie is about. It's all about being too late to change things, and faded dreams that never will be reached again. It's a fairly predictable film but it's saved by its quirky approach and the absolutely powerful and commanding performance by Mickey Rourke. He steals the show completely--and he just knows how to make you feel his pain just with a crack of his lips and the croak of his broken voice.

Despite that this is quite a depressing film, there are some funny bits in it. There's a great scene in a deli that he's picked up hours for, in which he sort of relives some "charisma" and shows how he "plays to an audience" while slicing up deli meats and sealing up penne pasta and egg salad. There's the aforementioned "sex slut" sequence, and there's an amusing scene of him playing Nintendo with a kid who makes no bones that playing this wrestling game is "an old game".

An old game can sum up this movie's plot and the character development as well, but it's unfair to put down a film that's at least earnest and deeply involved with its protagonist, even if what he does for a living can be a cheap and shoddy profession. It's still something you can actually admire, if you think about it.

:D :D :D out of :D :D :D :D

On a side note: The writer of this film is one of the former senior editors of The Onion. I think it's safe to say this guy has some range...

I thought the movie was decent, mainly because Rourke carried it with a fine performance.

However, I've seen a documentary on the subject that I thought was more interesting.

I liked his a-hole bosses reply to him wanting more hours "What do you need more tights?" (or something to that effect...)

Then after he retires and asks for weekend hours "I thought you sat on guy's faces on weekends...."

The movie is summed up well above. If you're a Rourke fan, this is a must see, as he IS the movie - and Tomei is riding shotgun.

Monty, are you referring to "Beyond the Mat".
I think "The Wrestler" somewhat mirrors the story of Jake "The Snake" Roberts.

Zack sums this one up nicely as usual. Just watched this on DVD. Worth a
spin, wasn't as dynamic as I'd hoped but an honest and gritty performance
by Rourke. Tomei was ok, yes very well put together for a mid-40s woman.
Rourke was in great shape as well, I was surprised. My favorite scenes were
those of him working behind the counter hamming it up with customers. In
the end, he finds that his only family are the fans that continue to show up
at the small venues and treats him as "somebody". It was a good rental
and you don't have to totally think too much about what is going on, just
sit back and watch what the guy is going through.

Also watched Verne Gagne's movie by same name, with Ed Asner as the booker. Done in '73. Kinda humorous, because it was Kay Fabe, and they had a storyline where the mob was trying to rig up the results!

Oh, and Verne played the champion. Shitloads of cameos, including Vince's dad, Dusty, Dick Murdock. Very much in the funny-bad category.

Finally got a chance to see this, and I enjoyed it. Rourke was excellent. And good god Marissa, man she looked good in this film
