I wasn't quite sure where to post this, but I guess Feder and Shaer are sort of graveyard figures...

From the Chicagoland Radio & Media message board...

'Tis true, and 'twas a surprising (to say the least), unbecoming showing for a 40-year veteran broadcaster in this market. Following John Calloway's follow-up interview to what was aired on Ch. 11 after Feder announced his retirement, when they told delightful stories and then asked if the crowd had any questions, Saunders bizarrely chose that opportunity to get up at the mic and hurl accusations and insults at Feder which had apparently been brewing in Saunders' head for years.

Feder was the guest of honor; Saunders couldn't have emailed him, written him a letter, or called to meet him privately, as opposed to involving other present members in his personal issues with the man?? Thankfully Tom Shaer got up and and said that though Feder wrote some negative things about many broadcasters over the years (including Saunders whom he called his friend) he also wrote many positive things, including calling Saunders "a local treasure" on many occasions. Shaer said he wished Feder would be back on the beat to act as a watchdog who takes some people to task when needed.

Until Shaer got up, it was one of the most shocking, unexpected, uncomfortable things to watch, a) because of the tasteless way Saunders chose to air his beef with Feder and b) because most of it was petty stuff that had no basis in race for his criticism at all. He was trying to put Feder on trial or something, and Feder was merely a guest interviewee at a union meeting, for pete's sake.

I know a few people that don't like Warner at all, as he is kind of a dick in person. You can't judge these guys on TV persona, but I think what Warner did surely speaks volumes about him.

Thanks for posting this, Zippy. Did anyone hear Feder on Mancow and Cassidy today? People are calling for Saunders' head for this episode. Dick Kay gestured to Saunders that he may want to sit down and Saunders yelled "SHUT UP, DICK!!"

OK, I'll play along...I know a few people that like Warner (professionally and personally) and believe Feder to be a dick (professionally and/or personally) in person. Feder seems to have no persona other than media curmudgeon, when not playing 'favorites' with one or two long time guys. Feder for years spoke volumes of BS through his 'column'. Something to promote, quid pro quo  -call Feder. You're one of his 'guys', but with a contract problem -- call Feder. Problems behind the scenes at 'LS/CBS/Clear Channel - call Feder (and hope he remembers his source around contract time)

Why is it that Feder had the right to use his bully pulpit for years, in often petty ways, but when he's called out on his BS publicly its wrong/classless/mean?  And then for an ass-kisser like Shaer to publicly reattach his lips on Feder's hindparts....funny.

Because a columnists job is to share opinions

A newsreaders job does not include screaming SHUT UP DICK!!!

Besides, if he (and many others) believe it and appear to have strong justifications for that belief, why is it so wrong to call this ass out for what he may be?

Every so often a circle jerk gets F'ed up and IMO it's funny that this guy had his go by the wayside.

Not classy perhaps, but when a jerk had a virtual monopoly on media criticism/discussion, perhaps Saunders felt he had to get in Feder's gutter home to clean up trash.

At the risk of being called hyperbolic, Feder often seemed like the local media's version of J. Edgar Hoover...so when it comes back at him and ruins his lovefest, I'm not going to shed a tear. I wish Saunders could have done it a different way, but he's going out, and likely feared that there aren't too many public forums in which to finally express a bit of 'dissent'/displeasure with Feder.

So you equate what Feder wrote (for his employment) with what Saunders did last night?

Given that I've long questioned Feder's motives, I'm not saying its right...but I understand

From his position as newsreader/anchor, THAT would be the wrong place, wrong time. There just never seemed to be a fair place to criticize him, w/o fear of 'reprisals'.

Feder had a lot of axes to grind over many years and a disproportionate number of them seemed to be with media people of color or women. His columns were too often petty exercises in 'douchebaggery', and no matter how he was ever called out on it, some(most) around here always thought calling him out was wrong.

Like I said, I wish Saunders had done it differently, but it did have to be done...its just too bad that only a guy nearing retirement felt secure enough to do it.

Or you could be like Feder, and form an opinion/column on the payola/favors/gifts he was alleged to have picked up for lo' those many years.

Allegedly.

It may have been brewing in Warner Saunders's pickled brain for years, but the fact that it took him years to spit out his lone cognizant thought simply proves Feder's assessment was correct.

Warner lost his fastball, he's been fading away for years - unable to read off a teleprompter without marblemouthing the words.

Good riddance you senile old fuck.

if Warner read Feder like he reads a teleprompter, I'm sure he probably misunderstood him...

OK, he lost his fastball awhile back. Agreed. He has had glaring on-air weaknesses that have grown over the past few years, no doubt. He still is one of the few anchors that many of us have had any respect for, for years. Unlike so many of the blow dried, seemingly clueless, ignorant and ethically challenged 'personalities' that inhabit local airwaves, he actually still seems to actually know/like the city and the history floating just behind the stories that continually make the news here.

"Senile old fuck"? Classy

I'm all about 'performance' and less about how 'nice of a guy' somebody seems. I'm sure Joel Daly's a nice guy too. But he belongs on a beach, combing it for coins - or in a wheelchair shitting in his Depends.

So who on Channels 2, 5, 7 (excepting a quickly aging Magers), 9 (excepting Suppelsa?), or the joke that is 32 would you say meets the Beef Rockmore Performance Scale?

Mike Adamle and Daryl Hawkes should be fired too. They can't read for shit.

For some reason, I'll give Cheryl Burton a mea culpa on her inability to read from a teleprompter.
